    I have been working at Federal Signal full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    good hours for salary people, never worked a weekend and very rarely you needed to stay late

    Cons

    no company direction as everybody is looking to meet the numbers, which are poorly calculated and forecasted anyway. Many union workers know how to play the game really well and they do just the minimal. Seems that a lot of people is there because they have enough seniority but almost no one shows a real desire to learn. Same thing with many salary employees, lack of professional attitude, engineers can work together and with others but supervisors are bad at disciplining people and following up. Schedulers don't even know how to create orders so everything is on a please-make-this system...I don't have time/send me an email are pretty common answers when you ask for help

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I guess the "healing" process would be a long and painful but they got to start some time and the sooner the better. Having a training and a disciplinary program that would allow employees to increase their knowledge and skills and the a system that would hold them accountable should be started.

    Pros

    Decent products when they take the time to assemble them correctly, which is rare

    Cons

    These people are dishonest. I would not recommend anyone working for them or buying from them.

    Quit ruining the company, retire

    Pros

    Decent pay unless you start now in the union, very friendly co-workers in most areas, understanding immediate supervisors, and the feeling that knowing your good work is keeping people safe.

    Cons

    Terrible HR, terrible union, terrible labor relations that harm the company as well as the worker, and most of all terrible middle and upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    It's not the 1930s anymore. Wake up and step forward finally instead of importing more from China as your solution to increase profit margins.

    Pros

    OK Benefits.
    Reasonable work hours.
    Reasonable salary.

    Cons

    The company is destined for breakup. The parts are more valuable then the whole, and the decentralized management systems do not work. There is disarray, and a lack of direction among senior management. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. With that disarray, you have a free-for-all with mid-level-management playing by their own rules. Too many managers, who won't roll their sleeves up and get dirty, and not enough "line" workers, which causes resentment among the rank and file. CEO is out of touch, and the mass exodus of mid-level and some senior management is evidence of that. Somehow, he has shareholders convinced he has a "plan". Where's the proof?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Accept the fact that the business is not going to grow, the culture is not going to get better, and product quality is going to continue to deterioriate. Once you accept that, make a decision -- go down with the ship, or jump while you can.......

    I worked at Federal Signal

    Pros

    It was interesting to know what happens when a car goes through a toll booth and what happens to charge the owner of the car for the toll. The web based application had lots of different options to learn.

    Cons

    Long hours and panic fixes lead to bad work life balance. Salary is way below market. There is little to no communication. Things are sprung on you at the last minute. No training available.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop treating your employees like mushrooms. You need to communicate more and give some incentives. And let them not have to work on the weekends once in a while.
