Avoid this company at all costs.

Process Engineer (Former Employee)
Farnborough, Hampshire, South East England, England (UK)

I worked at Fluor full-time for more than 5 years

ProsSalary is good.I think that's it. Benefits are poor. 9 day fortnight is supposed to make your work/life balance perfect... But Managers expect you to work off Fridays.

ConsProcedures driven. Managers are largely absent, but expectation that you will give your life to the company. Expected to arrive before 7am, and not leave until gone 7pm. Only expected to put 40 hours on timecard. All staff deemed Lazy and incompetent unless you are a manager.

Advice to Senior ManagementManage. Talk to staff... Listen.

I have been working at Fluor as a contractor for less than a year

ProsGood vacation time, and pay was on time.

ConsMicro management was one of the biggest issues. The housing was terrible. You would be packed in a dirty filthy tent with many individuals. Your job was always threatened for policy violations it was border line harassment.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management at Bagram was terrible. If you don't treat the worker well you will lose the contract anyway.

Boring place to work, stuck in old ways and mindset

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Sugar Land, TX (US)

I have been working at Fluor full-time for more than 8 years

ProsLarge company, strong emphasis on procedures and practices, if you are in the right network, it can be very lucrative.

ConsExtremely old school, run by people who grew up in 1950's and still think computers are the root cause of many inefficiencies.
One example is that they still block you from accessing gmail from work. Which is in fact counter productive. Coz almost everyone now has smart phones so people use their mobile devices to surf, which actually takes longer, so if the management was smarter then would actually modify the IT policies.
Also, there is no importance on real tech advancement, they tried developing an inhouse social network, to keep people engaged, but the systems are so antiquated that everything runs at a glacial pace.
Fluor was one of the biggest companies lobbying to Microsoft to keep XP alive, even after Microsoft stopped support.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to make relevant changes, just getting an inhouse social network doesnt make Fluor cool, you need to change at a much deeper level.

do not practice what they preach

Design Engineer (Former Employee)
Houston, TX (US)

I worked at Fluor full-time for more than a year

ProsThe company does a good job but overall spends way to much money

ConsHouston office is the worst, too many clicks at work , I mean it. if you are not part of it, better to just leave, have to butter up the bosses to succeed, many consider that normal these days. office conditions worst ever. lined up like phone operators with no privacy. stupid idea to save money, when they waste so much on other things

Advice to Senior Managementact like managers, do something besides just get along.

Process Director for 8 years.

Process Director (Current Employee)
Sugar Land, TX (US)

I have been working at Fluor full-time for more than 8 years

ProsThe only reason to work for Fluor is for the compensation

ConsThe work environment is all very small cubicles the size of a small closet in a hallway. This is even the case for managers and consultants. There is no distinction. The other aspect is that they swing between massive 40% plus layoffs followed a few years later by gigantic hiring. It is common for they to make you stay at home without pay if there isn't a contract to charge to. If you are over the age of 50 you have no career path. All of the emphasis is on the younger workers. The younger people must realize that there is no career path after around 45.

Advice to Senior ManagementThink about who the important knowledge workers are and give them a professional environment. Not a desk in the hallway.

Supervisor for Fluor not a nice person.

Field Clerk/Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
Clark, NJ (US)

I worked at Fluor full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe company they sent me to as an outside contractor was terriffic. Extremely nice people to work with especially the AVP Site & Facility and Purchasing Manager.

ConsThe supervisor I worked with unfortunately lied and I found out about it and I was fired for it because I went over his head to find out the truth.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe supervisor should have told me the truth in the first place that I was not getting a raise that year and would have been accepted without question.

Great company -- If you are a GOB

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Fluor full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat benefits, some of the best in the business. Earn a lot of time off, but don't even think of acutally taking any of it. I got paid out months of vacation when I left which was heavily taxed.

ConsGold one day and gone the next. Treated as company property. What others have said about Fluor being a "good ole boy" network with a dictorial management style is so on the money. I'm an educated, experienced, credentialed woman and always got the "leftover" projects that the men did not want. Fluor is the only large EPC that I know that will hire Director level people without at least a Bachelor's degree. I can only echo the "Project Engineer" titled review from 10/4/2013. Its all about who you know and who you suck up to at Fluor -- not real work. And if you're a woman -- you will never advance unless you are attractive and dress to impress -- not businesswise, menwise.

Project Engineer

Project Engineer (Former Employee)

I worked at Fluor full-time for more than 3 years

ProsLarge projects with unlimited budgets but tight schedules.

ConsPeople are not very bright. Field management and office management seem to understand management but not leadership. Old school management practices. My way or the highway. Lots of uneducated (non-degreed) people in management positions. Comapny has little appreciation for the well educated and top performers. Good ole boy system. Do not expect much from Fluor - except to be laid off.

Advice to Senior ManagementCluor could have an even larger share of the world market if it placed educated (and experienced) persons in management positions.
