I have been working at J Sainsbury part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Pay is nothing special - around average compared with friends of a similar age, have met some really nice people, good sense of community. I find talking with customers surprisingly fulfilling on occasion. As a part-time job whilst I've been at college this has worked fine.

    Cons

Extremely repetitive, often feels as if time is repeating itself. I haven't made much of an effort to move up in the company, but it feels as if there's few opportunities for us at the bottom of the ladder, the checkout workers and shelf stackers.

    I worked at J Sainsbury

    Pros

    Range of things to learn
Mysainsburys offers certificates to earn to help your personal progress/cv
    Good diversity in colleagues/customers
    Union
    Good pay (all round)

    Cons

Laziest management I've worked with. Overpaid by far!
    Stores are run by assistants.
    No backup from management.
Claims to be focussed on progression...only if your face fits (in each store its the same) as told by many friends from different locations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realise what you have got, I've seen countless assistants/ team leaders leave who are far more skilled with better potential than most management. give the opportunity to the people who are earning it! not just because their face fits.

I have been working at J Sainsbury part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Good discount. Friendly staff.

    Cons

Wait 6 weeks to be told you have got the job after initial interview. Wait 6 weeks after applying for promotion before interview. Still waiting to take up promotion after being told 3 months ago successfully passed assessment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step up to the mark, pull your finger out. Need to think about what effect to morale and general disposition waiting has on employee to the point they want to leave the company.

I have been working at J Sainsbury part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lovely people to work with, great shop floor and warehouse staff making it a fun working environment. Everyone works hard for each other, and get along well.

    Cons

Little chance of promotion to anything other than team leader, and those in management positions often have poor communication with those doing the work and are rarely seen on the shop floor. Having said that, some stores management teams are better than others. Applying for a job isn't the easiest and reapplying as a vacational student is problematic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Colleagues often feel there is a huge divide between management and the shop floor. Managers are not seen on the shop floor, and there is little recognition for good work.

There appears to be little progression to anything other than team leader, and when positions do become available, they are not well advertised for staff. The last intake of trainee managers in the store I was at was only disclosed to one colleague, who managed to get onto the scheme, despite at least 5 other colleagues who had all been promised the opportunity to apply, kept in the dark.

All in all, it is a good place to work, but the whole working environment would be better if management involved themselves more with the colleagues, and made more of a team environment, taking into consideration the talents and experience of the colleagues they work with

I worked at J Sainsbury part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Socially, you meet loads of like-minded individuals. Most employees are either young students or have worked there their whole lives.

    Cons

Young managers tend to be inexperienced and pushed up the ladder quickly from starting out. Hectic work pattern and often disorganised shifting. Holidays could be managed better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Engage frequently with staff, don't penalise for small things.
