    Felt like just another number.

PM Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA (US)

    Pros-Great products
    -great opportunities
    -PM roll rocks

Cons-hit or miss with management. i had really bad luck with a manager that rejected her last 3 interns.
-no personalized attention really -- off on your own and expected to figure things out completely (my experience, my friend had different experiences)
-traffic if commuting from downtown Seattle

Advice to Senior Management-Invest more in your employees
-Try to keep groups seem smaller

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great place to Intern. Disheartening as a full-time job.

Software Development Engineer In Test Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA (US)

ProsGreat place to intern. Advise against pursuing as a full-time job over the long term. Rewards, promotions, reviews are political - not merit based. More importantly, job satisfaction has hit rock-bottom because very few groups focus on building a truly successful products. Most everyone else is following another manager's orders. Very disheartening.

ConsThe company lacks a well-defined direction. Most groups are too large and organizations are too complex that a lot of effort is being wasted. This hurts because the impact of your work ends up being fairly negligible. Too many times, when saving a project from ruin, you might contribute immensely, but it's not a feather in anyone's cap and you won't receive credit for it.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease make this a tight running ship with a clear, focused path towards increased revenue. Honor good design, pay utmost attention to usability and end-user satisfaction. Stop jumping on the latest bandwagon, and be very clear on what not to do. Lastly, weed out the PM culture that impacts work, reduces the overall quality of your product and simply wastes resources. Your developers and designers have a lot of talent - listen to them. Everyone else in the group is a liability and is only slowing Microsoft's progress.

Then again - this advice may or may not be in line with your goal of a bigger promotion/paycheck/bonus.

It shows in the final product if a company is truly passionate about making something worthwhile. Learn from Apple.

    Intern

    Intern (Former Employee) Hyderābād

ProsFree drinks all around, flexible timings and informal environment. Lots of events and parties. Tons of options for playing options - pool, foosball, tabletennis, and lot's more. Hyderabad campus is really beautiful. Good Stipend and first two weeks at a good guest house. Work environment not pressurizing. Teammates are really helpful.

ConsAlmost none for an intern. The stipend can be increased a bit though.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good job.

    Software Development Intern

Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA (US)

ProsThe brought deadmau5 and Macklemore. Brand new computers and free soda and flexible hours. The perks of the large company are awesome like company events and gym membership.

ConsDon't pick team/ or project for summer. Most of the products are really boring and as a result the work that they make you do is not interesting.

    OK SDE internship at Microsoft

Software Development Engineer Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA (US)

ProsCompetitive compensation; ease of movement among teams in the company; management is fairly transparent with regards to feedback; if you seek a structured environment, this is probably a very good place for you

ConsFull-time employees seem obsessed with performance reviews; as an intern, I found myself explaining the basics of my project to full-time employees far more than I really should have, perhaps indicating a lack of knowledge and focus on my team; being a Microsoft employee is all about "drinking the kool-aid", that is, seeming dissatisfied with the way a team is operating is almost always met with negativity rather than constructive responses

Program Manager Intern (Former Employee) Redmond, WA (US)

ProsGood benefits-They provide pretty good benifits. Including gyms, transportation fees, relocation, flight...
Good salary-One of the most competitive salaries among tech companies
    Good perks

    ConsToo bureaucratic
    Boring works
    Can't contribute too much

    Well-designed internship program

Finance Manager Intern (Former Employee) Seattle, WA (US)

ProsThey encourage people to move around the different parts of the company every 18-24 months. So one need not feel stuck no matter how un-motivating the current group or work is.

Efforts to promote meritocracy (but not always successful, as some politics naturally creeps in, in such a large company)

    Great work/life balance.

Various events to keep employees up-to-date of the new technologies.

Great food of every kind in the canteens.

    Parking never an issue.

ConsI was a finance manager intern, and before joining I did not realize that finance is implicitly viewed a support function. The influence of finance partners is not significant in the major decisions.

Groups work in their own silos, with little transfer of best practices among them.

Advice to Senior ManagementBreak down the silos.
