Too big to fail

Executive Management (Former Employee)
Norwalk, CT (US)

I worked at Reed Elsevier Group full-time for more than a year

ProsReed Expo, the US- based division I worked for, is a leader in the exhibition and trade show space. This organization is strong at understanding the important touch points of a myriad of industries.

ConsFor many industries, Reed Expo's lack of authenticity and foreword-thinking activities hamper their effectiveness in that particular segment.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to work to understand that an industry event is more than just the specific days during which the trade show is held.

Good employer given the limit of the Dayton job market

Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
Dayton, OH (US)

I worked at Reed Elsevier Group full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThey offer good benefits and (for my profession) very good compensation based on geographical location. Leadership within my group was good.

ConsOverall company leadership was lacking. They fail to adequately value their employees. Perhaps this is just how it is with Big Business, but moral consistently dropped over the course of my 7.5 years there.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue your people.

Start-up organization that closed quickly

Director (Former Employee)
New Providence, NJ (US)

I worked at Reed Elsevier Group full-time for less than a year

Prosthe workers and managers including many executives were strong and valuable players in Internet business and marketing.

ConsCEO was only focused on selling the unit. The other senior executives were strong, but were not given the freedom to grow the business for the long term.
The division I worked had a poor business model - the model was to sell it.

Advice to Senior Managementdon't move so quickly into a new market that you're not willing to commit time, money and resources because you played with many people's lives when the organization was closed.

Low salary, company gutted.

Data Analyst (Former Employee)
New Providence, NJ (US)

I worked at Reed Elsevier Group full-time for more than 3 years

ProsLots of resources and opportunities to learn new technologies.

ConsWhen I was there, salary was very low (about 60% of what it should be). This doesn't matter now as the company has entered into a JV and been gutted.

A good company if you're in the right location

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Reed Elsevier Group full-time for more than 10 years

ProsExcellent benefits package, including time off for volunteer work, access to e-Learning is included. Outstanding people to work with, very smart and focused. Would recommend as long as you're in a "hub" city

ConsIf you don't work in one of the major hubs you are left out of a lot of things, and they seem to be closing a lot of satellite offices regardless of size.

Very large company and culture mindset

Director (Former Employee)
Norwalk, CT (US)

I worked at Reed Elsevier Group full-time for more than 3 years

ProsVery, very large company stability. The company has clear policies on HR, growth, travel, etc... I prefer small companies and working here was hard but always fair, always.

ConsFor me, the big company culture was hard. Things do not happen quickly and that can be a good thing if you can be patient.

Advice to Senior ManagementA little more transparency in the management thought process would be good.
