Workforce is thin and everyone is stressed to the max, those who want work-life balance get worked out...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Snyder's-Lance full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI have personally learned a lot working here because you have to wear 10 hats as they keep staff lean. Training was actually excellent for my dept.

ConsThe nicest people keep getting quietly let go or forced out which makes for BAD morale. Workloads are unbearable and stressful.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep the people you've invested in. Educate public on major packaging changes like Lance- people don't recognize it.

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Poor Leadership post merger

Business Analyst (Current Employee)
Charlotte, NC (US)

I have been working at Snyder's-Lance full-time for more than a year

ProsSnacks category is growing significantly.....lots of room for continued growth. Several brands are segment leaders.

ConsSerious lack of leadership by senior leaders. Very poor communication to employees led to horrible moral. Top performers quickly left after a year into new S-L launch. There is no infrastructure for development or career-tracking....very much still operating as 2 different companies...

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide a clear vision.

Bad idea

Route Sales (Former Employee)

I worked at Snyder's-Lance as a contractor for more than a year

ProsYou owned your own business and could take off when you wanted as long as your route got done.

ConsThe inventory method they used is crazy. You pay for stuff even if you don't sell it that week, no chance of selling back overstock. So some weeks you made no money.

Advice to Senior Managementtreat the route sales guys like part of company and not part of the problem.

Potential for greatness was lost post merger

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Charlotte, NC (US)

I worked at Snyder's-Lance

ProsPeople from Lance were great to work with.
Charlotte is a great place to live

ConsSnyder's management and personnel. Lost focus, trying to do too many things still and nothing is being done well.

Advice to Senior ManagementDave Singer has disappeared and let the company go down hill since the merger. He was on the path to creating a great company but now since the merger it has been downhill and the people are frustrated and unhappy. It used to be a place where your opinion mattered, now it is a place where your opinion is given to you.

SLAVE

Owner Operator (Former Employee)
Charlotte, NC (US)

I worked at Snyder's-Lance

ProsIndependence somewhat, work alone, meet great people, sheltered from weather mostly, great products, relaxed clothing policy, hire mostly good people

ConsOwners are responsible for ALL expenses and do not make enough to pay all of these and still make a living. Hours are long 10-14 a day 6 days per week. Owning a business that does not pay owner good after expenses is very stressful. No benefits. Basically it is legal slavery.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay enough so that people will want to work their routes and don't mind working long hours like UPS or Fed Ex. Provide a benefits pool from the owners with great benefits, further ensuring that they want to stay selling for company. Show appreciation for what they do. Don't lie about the pay when they interview. People are giving up good paying jobs with good benefits to work at Snyder's and then find out they can not afford to work there. In this economy, they are then unemployed and losing their property.

almost slave for short money

Independent Operator (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA (US)

I have been working at Snyder's-Lance

Prosthey have good stuff for sale and decent volume of sales weekly. independent.

Consthe worker needs to buy route around $80.000 you pay $300 weekly rate ( int.7,99%) pay computer sistem $35. pay stales $100 week, pay gas, insurance, maint. $250. the worker have no benefits. no vacation. no promo. the contract signed is terrible. if you want to sale the route they charge fee 5%. the comission is 19% of gross sale. average reg $7000 week. you make net $1360 after expenses . you make. $600. after that you have to pay taxes 15% and health insurance. bad deal and the company always wants more and more. slaves...of course.

Advice to Senior ManagementIndependent operators are the real power for sales. is not smart scam them in this way?

Sad to see the negative impact since Snyder-Lance Merger

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Charlotte, NC (US)

I have been working at Snyder's-Lance

ProsUsed to be a decent place to work. They had improved the talent pool over the past several years that should have made Lance more able to compete and grow profitably. Some of the new acquisitions had great potential.

ConsSince the announcement of the merger (really more like an acquisition by Snyder of Lance), many good people either left on their own or were terminated. Interestingly, appears to only be Lance people and unfortunately most of them were very good. Almost seems like Snyder's felt threatened. Now the culture is such that no one is motivated and feel like they could be next. Also, I do not believe there will be as much synergy as others predict.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is no secret that top management got big fat bonuses for their part in the merger but obviously did not care about their ranks. Lance management should have watched out for their own employees instead of letting Snyder's be in charge. If you keep up with this the shallow talent pool will become a cesspool.
