    Cons

    Having worked here for 17+ years. I have seen and dealt with a lot of change. Changes now are in favor for the CEO and higher paid people within the company. In order for us lower on the totem pole to get a raise you have to jump through these hoops that realistically unattainable. We are required to do extremely complicated work regarding state law, company guidelines, underwriting guidelines and company procedure. We have a very limited time in which to accomplish this work. In trying to adhere by these company procedures we are not able to always produce high quality work. They are setting us up for failure. People that have never had problems with their work quality and amount of work produced (in this department for 20+ years) are now on written and verbal warnings. The threat of losing your job is always hanging over your head. Not to mention the termination of employees who are ill. In my experience in this department I have seen three people who were out on short term disability for very legitimate reasons come back to find they no longer have a job. Then we, their co-workers, are advised that "so and so" has decided to seek other opportunities outside The Hartford and are no longer working for the company. You are expected to perform and produce like a robot. Their is no "human" aspect to this company any more. You never hear any good about what you are doing, but you hear a ton about what you have done wrong. Very discouraging. The job market is so bleak, you are forced to deal with it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stick up for your employees, realize their worth and praise them for it. Fight for fairness. Be morally correct. Just because someone can't always be a stellar performer doesn't mean they are worthless. Stop treating them like they are. We are just numbers, so stop lying to your employees. Give us realistic expectations and you may just be surprised at the great work and attitude you will get.

    Pros

    You get three weeks off, and can buy a fourth week. They give you so much time off because you will need it.

    Cons

    You are tethered to your chair for 7 hours a day. The only time you can get up from your chair is during two fifteen minute breaks and a thirty minute lunch. If you leave your desk for any other period of time, you will have to account for that time. My boss once told me that if he were still working on the phones (as opposed to being a manager), he just wouldn't take a bathroom break, meaning we (the employees) shouldn't take bathroom breaks.
    The customers who call in are mean and angry as a rule. The nice customers are the exception. Keep in mind, that people hate insurance companies and when they call in to customer service, they have a problem that needs to be fixed, so that makes for a negative combination.
    The call volume is high, so you're dealing with angry people back to back to back.
    There are barely any advancement opportunities. When I worked there, people who trained me and who had worked there for years and years still were on the phones.
    You have no control over your job or what you do in the 8 hours you have to be there.
    Oh, and a substantial amount of people who work there are obese because the job is so sedentary and unhealthy.

    No advice to management because management does not care.

    Not many. This used to be a great company with great work/life balance, benefits, and opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

    Work/life balance does not exist and the benefits are being scaled back. Might be cheaper to purchase health insurance on your own instead of participating in the company's plan. Rumored that employees will lose vacation time and have to pay for parking. What's next...charge them for using the bathrooms and pay rent for your cube? It's very clear that senior management has disdain for the rank and file. You are nothing more than an expense to them. Outsourcing is the norm. If you are not a vice president or above you don't matter to this company. Politics and optics have replaced sound business management decisions. Forget about taking any time off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The only business lever this company knows is the cost cutting one. Promoting the CFO to CEO over people who actually ran the businesses tells you all you need to know about this company. CFO has no experience actually running a business and his only contribution was cutting costs. Without any growth this company is a takeover target and most likely will no longer exist in less than 5 years.

    Work at home option 2 days per week. Good benefits

    Cons

    Expect to work 60 hrs a week to do just standard work. Company as a whole is solid however quality scores currently drive the company, instead of actually thinking through some inefficiencies. Staff is expected to work like robots. Staff morale is very low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop it with all of the multiple quality reviews and start looking at giving employees back the autonomy that they had a few years ago. Individuals could actually get some work done if they did not have to duplicate their work in a half dozen different places, for the sake of getting good quality scores. Company is totally run by metrics now. No longer a fun place to work. Employees are stressed to the max. Hire some worker bees and stop saying we are fully staffed.

    PTO, 401 K, and health benefits

    Cons

    For a Company in run off they treat their employees poorly. People are leaving in groups and The Hartford is not hiring to fill the position, just creating a larger work load on those who are left. Metrics are used for pay increases, metrics are out dated. You can never get a day off if needed, if you do call out, you get disciplined.

    Treat the employees with respect and increase the welfare wages.

    Pros

    None other than decent PTO time which was moot given the amount of time we were expected to work on a weekly basis as a salaried employee.

    Cons

    No work/life balance. Each department micromanaged. No room for advancement for nursing staff. Horrible favoritism in each department. Bullied with annual surveys, i.e., threatened if do not give top scores on surveys we will not get bonuses or raises which were less and less each year anyway.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get rid of management that favors employees. Why tolerate bad behavior from managers who are unprofessional and crass when you will not tolerate from regular employees. Stop expecting 60 to 70 hr work weeks.

    Pros

    They give you a good amount of paid time off, BUT.....

    Cons

    They give you a hard time when you want or need to take time off(although you have plenty of it to use). Its a constant revolving door,turnover is constant..I had 9 managers in 6 yrs due to company downsizing or re-aligning, most of them coming in with no sales or phone sales experience.It is who you know,not what you do. Never worked in such a negative/toxic situation, constant up set with poor management and the computer systems were so broke that their IT dept. had no solutions.Due to turnover the phones were so busy you couldn't breath,and big brother was watching everymove,writing you up for everything. Worked there 6 plus yrs until I could no longer stand the stress.

    Clean house of the useless management. They foster a negative environment and have no clue on how to do the job that their team is responsible for. UPDATE YOUR COMPUTER SYSTEM FOR GOD SAKES. You should be ashamed to have a company this size and provide such poor tools to the very people responsible for making your company money. Again, shame on you Harford.

    None really, the vacation time is sufficient. Work at home is available, but not offered any longer. Really. Don't think there is any pros

    Cons

    Management / Team-leads are passive aggressive and angry vindictive people willing to destroy this company to settle their personal agendas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Replace team leads / try training management to manage employees. Remember your front line employees speak with your customers, so maybe it might not be appropriate for your team leads to be mentally abusive to their employees. After all it's those employees who are the face of the Hartford, or have you forgot that.
