I worked at Waste Management full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good company, processes are very well thought out, very nice people to work with.

    Cons

Too much micromanagement, they seem to be out of touch with local competition. This may be a function of being a "Large Blue Chip" in a land of mom-and-pops.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Split the company, spin off the landfills, the residential collections and let the commercial collections run its course.

I worked at Waste Management full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

awesome coworkers, great benefits- one of the best anywhere. Great place for people entering the workforce and looking to advance into different divisions.

    Cons

Too many layoffs and restructuring initiatives. Not a lot of good project management as the company consistently changes direction after investing tons of money and time only to scrap the program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Deliver on your promises. Invest more time and money into employee development and training.

    Pros

Innovative waste solutions. Cool place to work.

    Cons

A lot of talk... The leadership team fulfills the definition of insanity: does the same things over and over while expecting different outcomes. Leadership team is too tactical - not enough planning before reacting and implementing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

SLT should work together more to include additional levels of leaders. Your should practice what you preach. The culture and values of the company would be awesome if the SLT created a zero tolerance for violations. Instead, the SLT looks the other way allowing problems to fester without addressing.

I have been working at Waste Management full-time

    Pros

-It is a melting pot of great people who work well under pressure.
-The company is constanyly growing, whether it be organically or through acquisitions.
    - WM has a variety of employee benefit programs that provide assistance both in and out of the workplace.

    Cons

-There is a large disconnect between the Corporate office and the day to day operation teams.
-Have significant cost cutting initiatives that eliminate key functions, yet continue spending capital on superfluous projects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please stop and take a moment to ensure you have a good handle on your core businesses and spend before another restructuring attempt. Take care of your remaining employees, because their efforts are what keep the lights on.

I worked at Waste Management full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great salary, great benefits, great people to work with!

    Cons

Too many layoffs!!!! No ones job is safe there; which is unfortunate. PLEASE TAKE NOTE: if happen to get hired to work in the corporate office downtown Houston, always keep your eyes open for jobs elsewhere because when the layoffs come... and they have every year for the past 3 or 4, they will be ruthless and many!!!
    t
Spoke with a current employee who said they asked one of the VP's when the last round of layoffs would be. They told them "They will NEVER be done laying off ever year". Always cutting staff to satisfy stock holders.

ONce again, if hired, keep looking until you find something stable because, unfortunately Waste Management isn't any longer! : (

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider the needs of each department before just issuing so many heads to cut based on how much so many heads will save a curtain amount of money. In the long run... more business plus less employees equals a decrease in customer service. Which equates to less customers... then another round of layoffs and the cycle continues.

I worked at Waste Management full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good pay, lots of overtime, causal environment (clothing) and generally nice, hardworking drivers and team. Very stressful and you'll never be bored. Everyday is a deadline and you'll interact/interface with some many different vendors and experiences that will serve you well in the company or in any future career.

    Cons

Management. Too much responsibility for a position that, unless you intend on being there for 5+ years, you'll never do anything else. Very cut throat environment and nobody has anybody's back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advise. Apparently the current culture works.
