TFA Corps Member at Teach for America

Declined Offer – Interviewed in Boston, MA (US) – Reviewed Jun 14, 2013 New

Interview Details I applied online, then got through to the in-person interview without the phone call interview. I did a 5-minute lesson plan presentation, discussed some pre-interview readings, and then chatted with two people in person about why I wanted to do TFA. Overall was a very positive and enjoyable interview process.

Interview Question – Have you ever quit anything?   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – My work situation was still very much up in the air and I would have had to commit hundreds of dollars in training before knowing whether my work situation was secure.

Teacher at Teach for America

No Offer – Reviewed Jun 13, 2013 New

Interview Details Long, tedious process. Went to a group interest meeting that seemed to be glossing over a lot of the material. I asked how the process of being in a child's life for only 1-2 years would have a long term effect and the recruiter just beamed and told me what a delightful question I had asked. Basically, she said a lot of euphemisms for personal satisfaction.
All of the interview questions fall into three categories:
2 questions on why TFA, why teaching etc
then half on whatever leadership position you wrote about in your app
and half about how you overcame challenges and difficulties

Interview Question – Very, very in-depth questions about your leadership position, so make sure you remember it well, and the lessons you learned from it.   Answer Question

Administrative Support Staff at Teach for America

No Offer – Interviewed in May 2013 – Reviewed Jun 13, 2013 New

Interview Details I applied for this position online and was contacted within a few weeks of submitting my application. All initial correspondence was done via email and everything was very well organized. I scheduled a phone interview online and an associate called me at the specified time and date for an hour long interview. The person I spoke with was very cordial and asked very meaningful questions.

This was followed by a second phone interview which was also a very positive experience. The hiring process seems to be a long one but I think it's for worth it for such a great organization.

I hear there is a project that selected candidates are asked to complete in a week's period. I'm not sure what this project entails but I would think it directly related to the job in some way.

Interview Question – (Be familiar with the core values and try to identify which one you most closely align with and why)

Describe a time when you dropped the ball and how you handled it.

Describe a time when you did not agree with a superior and you managed to accomplish your end goal in spite of this disagreement.

How do you stay organized?

Describe an accomplishment that you are proud of and why.

Side Note: There were almost always sub-questions that followed each main question pertaining directly to the original question. I would say this was done for clarification purposes.

Corps Member at Teach for America

Accepted Offer – Reviewed May 26, 2013

Interview Details First there is a written application, next a phone interview, then an in person interview that includes a model lesson, a "group" activity, and a 1:1 interview. The written application is very straight forward--the phone call felt a little uncomfortable, because I could tell what they wanted me to say, but I stuck to my thoughts, and it worked! Don't fake it!

Interview Question – What would you do if your principal said "no" to the following ____? (Role play)   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – No negotiations--except I was specific about the grade I wanted to teach.
