Hostile work environment, but I did learn a lot

Former Employee - Web Developer  in  El Segundo, CA (US)
Former Employee - Web Developer in El Segundo, CA (US)

I worked at Fuhu full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Working with bleeding edge technology
    - Learning a lot of new things (if you can hold out long enough) to grow your career
    - Not having to wait for some infrastructure team to install, configure, and grant access
    - Free snacks
    - Company-paid outings and events
    - "Some" very family-oriented people with whom you can establish bonding relationships
    - Good and taking other company's innovations and making things look/work better

    Cons

    - This may have changed, but there was no retirement plan.
    - They monitored consumption of snacks and reduced the amount they put out from storage to slow down consumption.
    - Difficult to establish bonding relationships due to the high turn-over rate and an atmosphere of having to watch what you say, because you may get reported.
    - Won't validate parking if you aren't a worthy candidate coming in for an interview.
    - They would say things in an attempt to motivate you, such as doubling salaries just to meet unrealistic deadlines.
    - Uses fear and intimidation to encourage long work hours.
    - Deadlines are really internal deadlines, but they won't tell you this until you're close to the unrealistic deadline, just so you will work harder. I've seen people who worked more than 12 to 16 hours, all for nothing and later to be told that the deadline wasn't hard-set.
    - Lied about the desire to provide work-life balance by going back to a 9 to 5 schedule, since working too much is known to be counter-productive and unhealthy. The president later contradicted this by telling employees that company will never be successful and accomplish its goals by allowing people to work a normal schedule.
    - Be prepared to work at least 10 hours. No sympathy (or empathy) is given towards long-distance commuters. Instead, they'll try to get you to move closer or may allow you to (temporarily) telecommute, but you can count on that being short-lived due to lack of trust.
    - Daily time sheet gets emailed to everyone in the company, as a means to drive people to compete and work long hours.
    - Depending on who you work with, your experience may be either rewarding or hostile. It appeared that morale and team unity was actually better in the Denver and San Jose offices.
    - Upper management will take your ideas and claim it as their own.
    - You're not allowed to get into a respectful disagreement with the President. Doing so will quickly get you on his black-list.
