    I have been working at GameStop full-time (more than 5 years)


    You choose your staff being a SM. Employees think it's the greatest job in the world to talk about video games. Cool benefits, like all expenses paid travel (only at SM level and above), game checkout policy.


    Work-life balance is almost non-existent if you are a SM. You are given X amount of hours to schedule your employees and X is the bare minimum to have 1 person all day for 7 days, with minimal overlap. You have to count on your entire team to take care of things when you aren't there, or you have to stay and fix it. SMs are required to work a minimum of 44hrs/wk, but are required to schedule 46 prior to break, to be "good at your job" you have to work at least 55- 60. If you're not "good" you will be fired.

    DM level and above have unrealistic expectations for stores, and will take advantage of any opportunity to brainwash an employee into thinking they are amazing, then turn around and say if you do X,Y, and Z, you'll get promoted. There is no feedback unless it is negative.

    Every year there is an annual conference that SM level and above attend, great for the first couple years, then if you open your eyes you see it's just a big brainwashing session. It's just a huge production that it looks like one of those cult conventions, and everyone is going to drink the kool-aid.

    Over the last 6 months, there has been an ethical/moral switch that has been turned off. You cannot stand up for something without getting shot down, and upper management then will find a way to fire you. Before all of these "new changes" you could talk to anyone, (they actually still pitch this as C.A.R.E.S.) from any level of management. Now if you open your mouth you are told to shut up and get back in line. It's almost as if Hitler himself has shown up to run GameStop.

    Pay is extremely low, I had 5 years of management experience prior to being a SM for GameStop, but was given a take it or leave it 33k a year, plus the free vendor items and bonus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your people. Understand where they are coming from, and give direct, concise feedback to help people. If you do not know the answer, just say you don't know. Don't make things up to satisfy the curiosity of an employee.
