Short-sighted emphasis, little regard for contract workers

Current Contractor - Customer Service in Bridgeton, MO (US)

I have been working at Ingersoll Rand as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

The coworkers were some of the best I know. All are hard-working, knowledgeable, and ready to help. The company keeps employees informed through regular newsletters, town-hall meetings, and miscellaneous events. The company has branches throughout the country, so if you're hired, you can move to a new location and still maintain your years of service. Best of all, you can leave your work when you go home for the night.

    Cons

In the year I've worked here, there's a slightly culture of distrust of senior management. Firing without warning is common for contract workers. Many persons I knew left work on Friday to get a phone call that night that they didn't have a job Monday. Even the best contract workers aren't hired. I remember one day seeing several members of the IT team taking cleaning out their desks because they'd been told shortly before that their contracts weren't being extended despite the many nuances of Ingersoll-Rand's IT team. The company has high expectations of all workers leading many to work closer to 45 hours per week during non-peak months. Corporate seems to care heavily about metrics and has lead to a revolving door of contract workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the skilled contract workers when their terms expire. Each mistake can cost the company hundreds of dollars. It takes a couple of months before workers are fully trained. Don't save money on benefits when you pay several times that much to process returns or concessions to customers for poorly processed orders.
