Former Employee - Hair Stylist in Columbus, OH (US)

I worked at Regis Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, work/life balance, laid back work environment

    Cons

Laughable paychecks and virtually no pay raise from entry level position. You need to have a large client base to make any sort of money and even then they take 40-50% of it. It takes years to build a client base and until then expect your minimum wage base pay which comes out to around $200.00 a paycheck since Regis considers 20 hours a week full time hours. Tips are good when you get clients usually however the salons have seen a dive in walk ins due to the economy and new stylists have a difficult time building clientele due to this. If you are ok with waiting 10-15 years to build up a client base in order to make anything over $400 a check by all means this is the place for you, however if you want to get paid for hard work immediately on a livable means look elsewhere. They want you to sell product, sell product, sell product but customers usually can barely afford the service. Even when you do make product commission the rate return is ridiculous.. That means you get about 16$ back. Why try when the company has no investment in you as a stylist. Stylists make appointments, great customers, sell product, clean the store, deal with problems, and of course color, cut and style hair. The managers make about 50k a year while the stylists work their butts off and can barely make ends meet. There is literally no point in working here, it's just like working at a fast food restaurant except you have to please clients personally 1:1 with their hair instead of their food, which believe me, can get ridiculous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward and acknowledge your stylists because they are the back bone of your company. Pay them a livable wage.
