    I have been working at URS Corporation, an AECOM company full-time (more than 5 years)


    The company has a good reputation for technical excellence and the training provided is very worthwhile. There are some incredibly technically competent staff who are given great opportunities to apply themselves, needless to say the technical abilities of URS are the standout highlight. The company has comprehensive internal systems for pretty much everything, an extremely solid and well regarded safety culture, in-depth project and financial management training and good opportunities for professional development. URS has a great reputation for having long term clients and the company operates primarily with these long term clients. Although the company focuses on mainly the private sector in Australia this is the envy of other consultancies who don't have those long standing relationships. Once URS has established itself with a client they are very good at turning them into high revenue generating clients through consistent and reliable project delivery (at least from the clients' perspective). When the market is good the company has rewarded it's staff with generous time in lieu and banked time arrangements, flexible working arrangements, promotions and alot of social events which incentivise staff to perform better.

    Overall, the key strength of URS is technical excellence and they are arguably the best when it comes to technical matters.


    The company is not market facing, it is facing itself and wondering why it has no work. The company is hamstrung by complex and pointless management systems, a pathological obsession with avoiding risk (to the point of making it so difficult to work with URS that clients go elsewhere out of sheer frustration), the company is slow to respond to the market, has an extremely poor attitude to business development, has managers with no clue about management and assumes technical staff can win work just on technical merit alone. Project managers are not supported in managing projects (and in many cases are scapegoated for budget overruns), technical staff are allowed to hijack projects and destroy budgets and client relationships, admin and support staff invigilate technical staff making it extremely difficult to do any work, project budgets are wasted on pointless financial forecasting and estimation, a myriad of pointless forms, endless project reviews which result in nothing but wasted time and money, management have endless meetings about nothing and are obsessed with project time (but can't see the connection between business development and having work to do), team structures are top heavy with principals and associates making them uncompetitive and some principals are paid far too much to do so little. The company has a complex key client management system, meaning that about 50 people have to be "consulted" before a call can be made to a client, no attempt to foresee clients' future requirements is made, value adding and value for money are foreign concepts and the managers ultimately don't care. The result of all this chaos is a directionless and over-managed lumbering behemoth that has lost sight of what it is supposed to be doing. URS was once a great company but has been run down and taken over by the administrative and corporate apparatus who Impose contradictory systems and processes and are too eager to make technical staff redundant. URS is a classic case of the tail wagging the dog.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get out of your offices and meet clients, wake up and realise technical staff bring in the money and making them redundant reduces the ability to generate revenue, get your heads out of the systems and focus on outcomes, recognise staff for winning work, take responsibility for organisational failures, take ownership of the problems and be accountable for fixing them
