I have been working at University College London full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I guess that the PhD experience depends on many factors, i.e. in which department you are working, who is your supervisor and what is your project. However, being at a top university as UCL helps you especially on a non-research point of view. First I found extremely useful all the university services such as the Career and Doctoral training services, with plenty of non-academic courses and events being organised during the term. Second, being in London is a fantastic opportunity to network. If you are interested in staying in academia you can visit people at nearby universities to discuss your results or to solve possible obstacles in your research. Its incredible how many conferences and science divulgation events are organised in London, you just have to keep your eyes open. If on the other side you are not interested in academia, but after a PhD you want to move into a industry...well, in London you can find Industries in all the possible fields, so even in that case it is easy to find good opportunities.

    Cons

What I mostly disliked is that UCL is so central in London that all the facilities are badly distributed and of very low quality. Recently there has been a continuous refurbishment of obsolete areas around the Uni, so I guess that UCL is trying to invest strongly on new buildings and new areas. At the moment it is often very complicated to find good office space. In the last three years I have been working in a office with more than 10 people and with no windows.
