    I worked at Alkermes

Alkermes R&D has an exceptional team of talented scientists, lead by a senior management team that is very strong scientifically. Salary and benefits are excellent.

Alkermes has a top-down command-and-control culture, with too much micromanagement and not enough empowerment/trust. Individuals who question the status quo or do not instantly align themselves 100% with the prevailing senior management position are quickly marginalized (or worse), even when they have valid reasons for taking an alternative view and have the best interests of the company at heart. Such individuals have no hope of rehabilitation. For middle management roles in R&D, political adeptness is far more important for career success than scientific/technical/managerial ability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value middle management more, listen to their opinions and lever their experience/expertise. Give them realistic objectives, empower and trust them to deliver, and they will produce ever greater success for the company.

Run from this company. The position was open for over a year, and I know why. They are terrible. All of my colleagues told me to pass on the opportunity. I should have listened. Management has no clue about this field. They want to present themselves as a mid-size pharma, but really they are a tiny player with no strategic goals. All management's prior experience comes from no-name companies, but they all act like they are industry leaders. My peers seemed like they very nice. But make no mistake, this is a sweat shop.

Alkermes, whose name is Arabic for "magic potion," is working some biotech alchemy. The firm uses its proprietary drug-delivery systems to make fragile biotech compounds that require less frequent dosing or provide more targeted delivery. Focusing on widespread diseases like diabetes, central nervous system disorders, and addiction, it has a couple of drugs on the market that use its injectable extended-release technology, which lets patients take a drug once or twice a month, rather than once or twice a day. One such drug is Risperdal Consta, a long-acting version of... More
