EFCS laid the foundation of a unique entrepreneurial culture, which over the years led to the evolution of Ideapreneurship. “Ideapreneurship” is HCL’s culture of grass-roots, business-driven, customer-focused innovation, in which every employee is an “ideapreneur.” This environment is shaped by HCL’s ‘Employees First’ values, which collectively empower and encourage individual employees at all levels of the organization to come up with innovative solutions to operational and customer challenges. It encourages employees to become idea-led intrapreneurs, who can think new ideas and drive them to fruition. These values promote employee behavior that when channeled through and leveraged by formal programs, generates unusual value for customers.
Ideapreneurs drive market leading growth for HCL wherein we have grown 115% in our revenues from the time we have incorporated EFCS in 2005 along with 580% growth in our market cap.
- Ideapreneurship case study is in Cambridge University Students’ Union (CUSU) publication titled Strategies for Success.

- Leading analyst firm Forrester published a case study titled “HCL Technologies Puts Employees First, Customers Second” in 2011.
- Harvard business school teaches HCL as a case study on organizational development.
- EFCS was the subject of a Darden School of Business case study on the impact created by HCL through its Employees First, Customers Second philosophy.
In a growth-constrained, post-recession world where many traditional sources of advantage are becoming irrelevant, the best bet for nations, companies and individuals to succeed is the power of their ideas. At HCL, we believe that acknowledging such ideas and learning from them is vital as we make progress in today’s environment.
HCL’s vibrant intrapreneurial culture is giving rise to institutional and grass-root programs that help in seeding ideas, nurturing creativity and harvesting innovation – Value Portal, Mad JAM and LeadGen.
The Value Portal has a very strong and robust process of employees committing their ideas relevant for their customers, the ideas going through an approval cycle leading to an approval from the customers and then finally leading to implementation of the ideas. As of today, we have implemented around 7,000 ideas out of 25,000 ideas that got generated through Value Portal with certified business benefit by customers of over $470 million.
LeadGen encourages employees to contribute business opportunities, enabling them to add directly to HCL’s revenue and earn monetary reward with company-wide recognition. There has been a contribution of $200 million through this platform.
MAD JAM celebrates outstanding ideas from within HCL that have been implemented for clients.Till date MAD JAM has generated $50 million revenue for HCL.
When we set out to understand what really defines our brand we didn’t find the answer in the HCL brand positioning. Nor did a dissection of the HCL brand identity give us an answer. We found the answer in our people. Today, 95,000 Ideapreneurs are changing the world one relationship at a time. And they’re doing it by taking their relationships with their customers beyond the contract.
At HCL, our approach to engagements is best described by the word ‘relationship’. Because every relationship – be it between family members, friends, colleagues, or clients and vendors – operates based on a contract, whether written or unwritten. But beautiful relationships, like the one captured below, that benefit both parties are sustained by emotions, behavior, and actions that go beyond that explicit or implied contract.
We believe that our values of Trust, Transparency and Flexibility fuelled by our philosophy of ‘Employees First’, is what will ensure a continued defense of our customers’ interests. For these values nourish a relationship from outside the box, empowering every day innovation by thousands of our employees interfacing with your system lifelines and critical business processes. While we have institutionalized this Innovation through unique platforms such as Value Portal and MAD JAM, our Alternative propositions such as ALT ASM, Enterprise of the Future, Digital Systems Integration, Enterprise Functions as a Service, Innovation Monetization and zCMO ensure that we are able to deliver “relevant” business value in real-time despite changing times. We encourage you to take a look at a crisp summaty of all this in our corporate presentation below.
We don’t use contracts to save our skin. We believe in taking every relationship beyond the contract by putting our own skin in the game through collaboration, applied innovation and new generation partnership models that put our customers’ interests above all else. ‘Relationship Beyond the Contract’ doesn’t simply define HCL’s brand positioning or its brand identity. It is a spirit that’s alive in our 95,000 Ideapreneurs who are passionate about only one thing- making our customers’ business more efficient through everyday innovation.
At HCL, we recruit for a spectrum of roles—from consulting to technology—where employees can identify opportunities to start-up their ideas. Our employees who we call - ideapreneurs are strongly encouraged to use their own initiative and to be flexible. They are given the freedom to shape their roles and to define areas of work that will benefit directly from their individual expertise.
While recruiting, we particularly look for ideapreneurs with an innovative and enterprising streak. This democratic approach encourages open discussion and brings new ideas to the table. This advantage of being an ideapreneur enables employees to view themselves as intrapreneurs and change makers. They take pride in their ideas delivering value to customers, thereby transforming the business landscape.
Come aboard, partner with us as we surge ahead, and start everyday with new ideas and new enthusiasm. We don’t just want to play; we want to change the game itself. View the Jobs section to explore the current career opportunities at HCL.

I have been working at HCL Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)Pros
1. Good environment to learn.
2. Supportive senior members (till they don't find you as a competition for them)
3. Direct client interaction
4. Onsite opportunities.
5. Time to time employee re creation activities.Cons
1. Very Low salary hike in some of the projects (at least in my project).
2. Very opaque policies, who constantly try to prove that they are transparent.
3. Full of politics (you're safe till the higher level colleagues don't find you as a competition for them).
4. Very strange reasons for bad appraisals.
5. Appraisal is never dependent on your performance and contribution to team.
6. HR are really very slow. Even to receive your own money you need to wait for minimum 1 month.Advice to ManagementAdvice
Even the management and senior managers know , who is involved in politics and who are working and providing them the revenue. I request the managers, not to let go off the senior and knowledgeable person on cost of those people who are not doing anything except mails.
Please change your policies about replacing a 7 or 8 year experienced guy with a 7 days old fresher.
Please implement the quality gates that you boast about. Else, a time will come when All those who work would have left and only those who know nothing and only send mails would be left in the team.RecommendsNegative Outlook
