​​Our Story​​​

​​​​Holiday Retirement was founded by William E. Colson, often recognized as the father of Independent Retirement Living, with his father Hugh Colson in 1971. At the time, William was operating Colson & Colson construction, specializing in building high-level care facilities for seniors – referred to as “nursing homes”.​​​​

William and his father realized that while seniors were benefitting from the quality care they received in these facilities, they could be benefiting even more from a nurturing, community environment that met seniors’ other needs: social, physical, educational and spiritual, at an affordable, all-inclusive monthly rate.

They opened their first independent retirement community in Vancouver, Washington in 1971. Today there are more than 300 Holiday Retirement senior living communities across the United States and Canada, and tens of thousands of seniors are enjoying the one-of-a-kind lifestyle only Holiday can provide.

Although we have grown in size, we remain true to the core values instilled by William E. Colson, and are as committed now as he was then to improving the lives of seniors.

A History of Growth​

1971 – William E. Colson and his father Hugh Colson found Holiday Management Company. First community, Kamlu Retirement Inn-Vancouver opens in Vancouver, Wash. on Nov. 1.

1977 – Edgewood Downs in Beaverton, Oregon opens on June 1 and is Holiday Management Company’s second community.

1985 – Harrison Regent in Ogden, Utah opens on July 1, 1985 and begins Holiday Management Company’s expansion east. The company’s first nine communities were exclusively located in the western region of the U.S. (Washington, Oregon, California, and Idaho). Communities are also opened in Colorado (Pueblo and Colorado Springs), and Texas) (Amarillo).

1987 – Holiday Management Company changes name to Holiday Retirement Corp. and opens first Canadian community, The Victorian in Victoria, British Columbia, on August 1, 1987.

1988-2009 – Holiday Retirement adds at least two communities to the portfolio every year.

1998-1999 – Holiday Retirement experiences record growth by adding 44 total communities.

2007 – William E. Colson sells Holiday Retirement to Fortress Investment Group LLC of New York. Colson passes away from colon cancer on May 20, 2007.

2008 – Jack R. Callison Jr. is named Chief Executive Officer.

2009 – Holiday Retirement makes $82,500 donation to American Cancer Society.

2010 – Three seniors win free rent for life through Holiday Retirement’s national Swing into Spring promotion.

2011 – Holiday Retirement donates $1.2 million to Outward Bound for Veterans and $61,000 contribution to Outward Bound Canada, Veterans Program in March. Holiday Retirement adds first community since 2009, acquiring The Chateau in McKinney, Texas on July 1.

2012 – Home office relocates from Salem, Oregon to Lake Oswego, Oregon on April 16, 2012.
Holiday Retirement acquires Parkview in Allen (Allen, Texas) on March 1, Village at the Falls(Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin) and The Regent (Corvallis, Oregon) on June 29, and Holiday at the Atrium (Glenville, New York) on July 31.

A Proud Tradition of Giving​

Our more than 300 communities were founded on the spirit of service. We firmly believe in the power of giving back to others, and we happily offer residents regular volunteer opportunities through our award-winning Seniors Serving Seniors/Seniors Serving Society program.

Collectively, Holiday Retirement is dedicated to participating in a variety of charitable endeavors and causes, both locally and beyond. Holiday Retirement donated $82,500 to the American Cancer Society in 2009 and $1.2 million to the Outward Bound for Veterans program in 2012.

Outward Bound for Veterans

Since its inception, ​Holiday Retirement's Outward Bound initiative has helped 600 deserving veterans experience life-changing journeys.

2013 - Holiday Retirement pledged to raise another $1.2 million to continue the Veterans course.​

2012 - Holiday Retirement donated $1.2 million to fund​​ the Outward Bound for Veterans course for 600 veterans.

2011 - Holiday Retirement made its first donation of $61,000 to Canada's Outward Bound program.

    I have been working at Holiday Retirement part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    As co manager & floating manager in about 30 Holiday units over a 15 year period, I am proud to say Holiday has been very good to us. We have full benefits, no traffic jams, are well fed and housed with wonderful staff & residents wherever we go, even on vacation in our units across the US. When mom became a resident, I learned the family and resident side of the story, and must say mom has thrived. Health, social life, and financially, Holiday has bent over backwards to make her life comfortable. She says "I never dreamed I could be living this well at 96." Most of our residents are quite happy and thankful.

    Cons

    Management teams who micro manage and don't follow the Holiday guidelines. Some residents are very needy & management is so pressured to rent apartments, many come needing more care than we are legally allowed to give them. Need to clarify those concerns when doing discovery.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Too many power struggles between managers & co-managers. Need smart pairing of management teams. Peace & joy in the building is the main goal and management must get along better....maybe people skill classes..
    Quarterly mandatory training for servers who work weekends & evenings would maximize efficiency and avoid unfinished tasks & working past end of shift.

    I applied online - interviewed at Holiday Retirement.

    Interview Details

    I applied on-line. You will then get a call. If you are a candidate the company will call you right away. If you don't get a call you may want to reapply in a month. You have 2 phone interviews then you will get a call from a Regional for a 1on1. If the Regional thinks you are a fit she will have you finish the paperwork then a contract will get signed. Then you will be going to training for a few weeks. It will be mostly on sales. They do pay your moving expenses after you have turned in you receipts. Then you will be at training community for two more weeks. You will then be with another set of Main managers. If you are unhappy with the match the company does try to re-locate you to a different community. It takes about a good year and a half to get real comfortable with the job. It you can weather the first year you will be accustomed to the way the company works. If you love people this can be very rewarding. If you only need a job, do the company and yourself a favor and don't even apply. This is not for the weary.

    Interview Questions
    • You will be asked if you can work with your partner?. It takes a while to get on board but you will get a job. There is a high turn over and they are always in need of managers. The central California Region has a great regional Manager Javiera Garcia. She works very hard to take care of her managers and to solve any issues that arise. This kind of work is not for everyone. I almost left a few times but hunkered down an made the best of it. Now I would not leave unless I really needed to. There is always room for improvement in any company.   View Answer
