Jobs Done Well
Innovation, hard work and integrity. These are the keys to Kiewit's success. Kiewit is one of North America's largest and most respected construction and mining organizations. For over 125 years, we have delivered world-class solutions to projects of every size, in every market. No project is too challenging or unique, too big or small. Our goal for every project is the same — build it safely, on time, on budget and with no surprises.
Kiewit is synonymous with superior quality. We've built our reputation on the principles of broad-based employee ownership, autonomous local offices, dedication to employee training and development, and sound financial practices. Our commitment to these principles is reflected in the success of our projects. We're consistently ranked as one of the top 10 contractors by Engineering News-Record.
Kiewit people are defined by a few basic characteristics. They have a willingness to take on challenges and explore new ideas; they have the drive to excel and the determination to perform their best. They carry out work in the safest manner possible, as demonstrated by a safety record that is unmatched in the industry. As employee-owners, Kiewit people have a stake in the success of every project.
Kiewit people are experts. From day one, our employees receive some of the finest training in the industry, coupled with hands–on mentoring. We are as dedicated to the success of the people we hire to build our projects as we are to the people who hire us to build them. Kiewit has one of the highest percentages of graduate and registered engineers in the industry, and our senior operations managers have been with us an average of 25 years.
As a local contractor with extraordinary national resources and support, few companies can match Kiewit's ability to meet a client's needs. Our subsidiaries operate from a network of offices that extends throughout North America. We've completed projects from the Arctic Circle to the Gulf of Mexico. The highway, the tunnel, the dam, the airport, the energy plant and the high–rise—no matter how complex the project, we meticulously plan every detail and double check our double checks. It's a philosophy that has not only allowed us to reach our dreams of success, but to exceed them.
Commitment to Excellence
Peter Kiewit once said, “The amount of work that anyone can do is limited; the results he or she may achieve by selecting individuals of ability and energizing them is almost unlimited.”
Kiewit is successful because our people have the ability and desire to build exciting and challenging projects. Kiewit people possess a drive to excel and a willingness to take on new and unique responsibilities. We have initiative. We explore innovative ideas. We seek better solutions. We are enthusiastic, hardworking and committed to quality and excellence.
As an employee-owned company, our company's assets are managed by those closest to the work. Long-term strategies are formulated by managers who grew up in the business. Most of our executives are long-time Kiewit employees who started as project engineers, superintendents and foremen. At Kiewit, employees are promoted to levels of greater responsibility on the basis of their demonstrated ability. This led Forbes magazine in 1983 to describe Kiewit as “the ultimate meritocracy.”
After our people, our reputation is our most important asset. A reputation for honesty and integrity is essential to our business. We conduct our business in a manner that earns us the respect and goodwill of those around us. Doing good work, completing it on time, and dealing fairly and honestly with everyone involved are essential to maintain our excellent reputation in the industry.
Safety has been a core value and a part of our culture for decades. Kiewit is committed to the highest standards of safety performance possible consistent with sound construction practices. An organized and effective safety program is developed for each location. We recognize the achievements of those who directly supervise projects with outstanding safety records. Providing a safe work environment is a priority and adherence to safety policies is a condition of employment.
People. Our Most Important Asset
Kiewit people are experts in their fields, recipients of some of the finest training in the industry. We know the success of our projects is determined by the success of our people, therefore we’re dedicated to their professional and technical development.
Kiewit has developed quality engineering and construction training programs. These courses are the foundation of our program and provide the basis for future success. Courses are provided in formwork, surveying, and planning and scheduling. As employees advance, they may be eligible for selection and participation in programs such as the Supervisory Conference, Superintendents’ School and Management Seminar.
Additional training programs are held annually to address needs in specific areas of construction. These programs include:
- Business Manager Training
- Equipment Maintenance Manager’s Training
- Maintenance Engineer Training
Our districts provide a variety of training opportunities throughout the year based on staffing requirements. Most districts provide courses in:
- Foremen’s training
- Project engineering
- Project management training
Educational Expense Reimbursement
Upon successful completion of accredited coursework, employees will be reimbursed 75% of the cost for books, tuition and lab fees (up to an established maximum) associated with approved educational or vocational courses.
Professional Certification or Registration
We encourage our employees to seek professional certification and licensing as appropriate for their career needs.
Full-time employees will be reimbursed for the cost of applying for and obtaining professional certification or registration directly related to their duties and position.
Professional Societies/Technical Associations
We encourage participation in professional societies, technical associations and industry organizations.
Our culture is genuinely different than most. After all, a 130-year track record doesn’t happen on its own. Here, you’ll find some of the hardest working people, a strong code of ethics and a shared passion for company success. Not to mention a safety record that’s four times better than the industry average. At the end of the day, we’re proud of what we do because we do it well. Just ask the millions of people around the world who drive across the bridges we build or power their homes through the plants we construct.
At Kiewit, we know there’s more to life than building some of the most important construction, mining and engineering projects in the world. That’s why we make it a priority to give you the support and resources you need to reach your goals both in and out of the workplace.

- Application Details
I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks – interviewed at Kiewit Corporation in January 2015.Interview Details
Worst interview experience ever! Hiring manager was so incompetent, got called back for second interview within a few hours of first interview. Before the second interview, I was told by the hiring manager it looked 'promising' and he even went on to ask about my availability. Did pretty well in both interview, yet no offer was made, instead they went to hire an internal contractor. What a waste of time!
This was second time at Kiewit for me that they hired somebody internal instead, why waste time interviewing others outside the company if you are going to be biased.
Nonetheless, the HR is nice enough to let you know about the post interview decision. I would recommend asking the HR if they are considering anybody internal for the position first and then come to the interview or even apply. Never again!Interview Questions
