Former Employee - Teacher in Los Angeles, CA (US)

I worked at Los Angeles USD full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The benefits are great. The vast majority of the teachers and administrators are great. There are many resources available, if you can navigate the system successfully.

    Cons

A lot of PDs that are poorly planned, and amount to a waste of time/money when we could have been in the classroom. It's a huge bureaucracy so it can be difficult to get help with your needs or the needs of students.

    High School Teacher Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate  in  Pacific Palisades, CA (US)
Anonymous Interview Candidate in Pacific Palisades, CA (US)
    Application Details

I applied in-person. The process took 1 week - interviewed at Los Angeles USD in August 2010.

    Interview Details

I was initially hired on an emergency credential, but subsequently got a clear teaching credential, after which I was immediately hired at Palisades Charter High School after one interview. Most questions had to do with discipline not education...very little of which takes place in most LAUSD schools. I was hired because I had just finished teaching for 7 years in France and had gotten my clear credential in 2 quarters. The school I was hired to teach at was high performing when compared to the vast majority of failing LAUSD public schools. The thing that is most frustrating is that it would be easier to fix the problems than to maintain the failure, but there are political reasons for the latter.

    Negotiation Details
No negotiation. Your are ranked in exclusively based on credential, years of service at any school, and units beyond your BA and teaching credential. You top out on the salary scale with 10 years of service, but there are several minor career increments thereafter.
