Great Local Offices/Large, Uncaring Corporation

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at AECOM

ProsFlexible schedule, good opportunity for work/life balance, decent benefits.

ConsCorporate is overly-focused on the bottom line. Employees feel like numbers, not people. No sense of job security. Very top-heavy organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake your employees feel valued. Focus on retention.

Great local office, distant upper management.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Wakefield, MA (US)

I have been working at AECOM full-time for more than 10 years

Pros1) Global opportunities for people and interesting jobs.
2) Great local offices.
3) Large company with experts in any field if you can find them.
4) Very flexible work schedule.

If you find the right office, AECOM is a great place to work. The Wakefield office has lots of projects from all over the world, expertise in lots of fields, flexible managers, and great people.

Cons1) Upper management making decisions without regards to the employees that are affected by them.
2) Very big - so big that it's hard to change things quickly.

This is a big company - so individuals get lost in the big corporate environment. Listen, this is a tough economy so yes money is a focus. It's a business and needs to make a profit. However, decisions are made that seem to not to take into account that employees are actual people sometime. This is generally does not apply at the office level, but above that.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat people like actual people and not just numbers in a budget.

Great beginnings

Engineer I (Former Employee)
Atlanta, GA (US)

I worked at AECOM full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI had a wonderful set of managers, excellent facilities, and given opportunities for responsibility very early. My efforts were rewarded by the managers I had.

ConsLimited training. At the time of employment, there wasn't a employee development program in effect. High stress. Lack of project overlap.

Advice to Senior ManagementI don't think its fair when an employee works tirelessly to win a proposal worth millions of dollars, contributed personally to the winning elements thereof, and then is laid off while the contracts are being signed during that bureaucratic downtime.

Generally Satisfied

GIS Manager (Current Employee)
Raleigh, NC (US)

I have been working at AECOM full-time for more than 7 years

ProsBig company, lots of opportunities to be involved in large and interesting projects. The pay is competitive and there are opportunities to get involved with lots of different work. Have been able to receive promotions and advance in my career.

ConsToo many cooks in the kitchen, top level management only concerned about numbers in a spreadsheet and not interested in employee development or satisfaction. No training or development is offered to employees. No incentives or bonus plan. Too many hoops to go through to get approvals for anything.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't just talk about making changes, do something about it. Don't talk about utilization so much. Give employees more opportunities to receive training and attend conferences.
