I worked at Ace Hardware full-time for more than a year

ProsWill learn an enormous amount of hardware knowledge
Good way to interact with the community
Great retail experience

ConsWill probably not learn about sales
Standard retail job, fairly low wage, and limited flexibility
Not a lot of room to move up in small franchises

Advice to Senior ManagementThis job can be a stepping stone for young individuals. Having a positive reaction to employees moving on to different careers would create better referrals for new employees.

Good people but little appreciation for loyalty.

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Hilo, HI (US)

I have been working at Ace Hardware full-time for more than 10 years

ProsHelping customers who seek out their "favorite Ace Man"; being recognized all over this island; being on a local TV station representing Ace. Training helped me be able to help homeowners achieve their goals, which feels good. Ace has been good at helping out employees who have family or health issues arise that interfere with work for periods of time.

ConsAfter 20 years with Ace I was told Iʻd reached the top of their pay scale at $10.25/hr. They also do schedule changes without asking or warning employees, making appointments and such difficult to make/keep, or shared transportation tricky, etc. They not only do schedule changes without asking/informing, but expect employees to keep checking for such--and at times even when an employee is out for the day, so then goes to work the following day even though they are not expected--or their time was changed.

Advice to Senior ManagementAppreciate loyalty and employees who are Walking Advertisements for Ace everywhere they go. ASK employees if they are able to make a schedule change--or let employees work a switch out among themselves. Also, INFORM them when one has been made rather than make employees check constantly, and at times be pleasantly or unpleasantly surprised.
