I worked at Akin Gump as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The employees of Akin Gump are brilliant legal minds but are still able to maintain a friendly and inclusive work environment. This firm is top-quality, allowing employees to climb the ladder in the legal world.

    Cons

The extremely high-paced and stressful nature of the firm leads to very demanding work hours, weekends included.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management is incredibly accessible and receptive to concerns and illnesses, when they arise.

A firm full of talented attorneys with little hope for advancement to partnership.

I have been working at Akin Gump

    Pros

The firm is full of talented associates, counsel, senior counsel and partners, many of whom are also great colleagues.

    Cons

Advancement within practice groups is entirely contingent on the good faith of the partners with whom you work. The firm lacks a system for measuring performance independent of the specific reviews given by partner and more senior ranked attorney supervisors. As a result, stellar work can sometimes be lost, unrecorded, and unrecognized, especially when conflicts develop between rising stars and established partners.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a system of 360 evaluation that will enable subordinates to report out on the management skills and other abilities of more senior attorneys. Develop a method for recording work origination that accurately captures when non-partners originate matters.

I worked at Akin Gump full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great pay, easy to find work within the fast-growing sections, lots of autonomy and respect among lawyers, and great location within D.C. The usual perks of being at a large law firm, with a bit more tech-savvy crop of yound partner than you'd expect.

    Cons

Easy to get pigeonholed if you're not careful with your development; Lots of work-related travel and, like most biglaw, no work-life balance; High-level management tends to be great but lower level management can sometimes get in the way of getting interesting work; Some high attrition within certain groups, especially where management and clients can be quite difficult

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider how to keep people from leaving the firm by preventing them from getting stuck working for the same client or partner; better orientation and training within the section would be great

I worked at Akin Gump full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Partners and associates are rich and well fed.

    Cons

Everyone not a lawyer is treated like a dog (not in a good way). Long hours, low pay, no job security, threat of layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat the non lawyers with respect. THEY are WHY you get to bill so many high priced hours. Paralegals and legal secretaries and support staff do most of the work. They arrorneys sign off on the work.

I worked at Akin Gump full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay, good management, willingness to buy tools required to complete projects.

    Cons

As they got bigger and influence shifted from the DC and Texas offices to the NY office, I felt they put partner compensation above all else. Traditionally they had focused on development and appreciation of both staff and attorneys. Obviously, attracting and retaining the top attorneys is key to the success of any law form, but valuing staff is also important.
