    I worked at Altera

    Pros

There is a culture of solving the problem at hand rather than assigning blame. Compensation seems okay. Some departments allow non-traditional working hours and arrangements. The push for more diversity in management seems to be coming from a genuine desire to improve decision making and outcomes.

    Cons

The ranking system at review time really puts too much pressure on middle managers. I think the whole '10%'ers system is outdated and has proven to be ineffective. Perhaps Altera's system isn't as strict and public as Microsoft's was before they abandoned it, but in some groups, it can have a toxic effect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop saying 'hairy audacious goal'. Enough with preaching about 'innovation' in general.

I worked at Altera as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

    Amazing learning opportunity for interns
Many interesting projects, very cutting edge technology
I was given a lot of responsibility as an intern and was treated like I worked full-time.

    Cons

Compensation may not be as high as some other Silicon Valley companies, but is pretty standard in the semiconductor industry.

I have been working at Altera full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Altera operates in a duopoly, so business is usually good and bonus and profit sharing happen across the board. The company is mid size, so you can actually know people from different departments. Benefits are good too and the campus is over all very nice.

    Cons

Some department are ruled by old timers and it is very hard to grow. After several product delays, there is a sense of pessimism and resignation that things really can not change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The VP and SVPs should be held accountable for perennially delayed products. To expect engineers to deliver on unrealistic time lines again and again is a recipe for disaster.

Current Employee - Software Engineer Advanced in Toronto, ON (Canada)
Current Employee - Software Engineer Advanced in Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Altera

    Pros

You have a great number of smart engineers around the office to work and bounce ideas with.

The work is technically challenging and engaging with lots of interesting problems to solve in large scale software and semi conductor development.

You feel as though you work hard, but still get to enjoy time at home as well. Base compensation is good for the region.

    Cons

A lot of smart people might make it an intimidating place to work, and difficult to get ahead.

Many of the technical challenges are self inflicted (taking on too much), result of technical debt (shortcuts in the code base) or deal with infrastructure issues.

    Bonuses could be higher.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is hard operating in a duopoly market, but we should try to be more proactive than reactive. Also, don't work on features 'because the competition has them' but instead whether they make business sense. We should use our influence in the market to simplify the next generation of products rather than go for a spec war.

    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
