Great company to work for

Advanced Design Engineer (Current Employee)
Bayan Lepas (Malaysia)

I have been working at Altera full-time for more than 3 years

ProsHardware wise, it provides good cubicle privacy, gym room, multi-storey car park, almost the best cafeteria.
Software wise, it have friendly colleagues, a lot of new knowledge can be learnt, internal/external training provided
Benefit wise, most medical needs is covered, free assorted biscuits refilled weekly, free blood test annually, team building, time-off can be applied easily

ConsCompetition with rivals cause project direction shift. Loosing man-hours, lowering compensation. You might be working on some important project now, but will need to abandon it later.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe transparent to compensation policies. Employees are more willing to work for the company if they know they are being compensated fairly.

Good, not Great

Principal Engineer (Current Employee)
Austin, TX (US)

I have been working at Altera full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood pay and benefits. Good work/life balance. Interesting projects from time to time.

ConsMoving from technology company to maintenance company. Always on the cutting edge for silicon nodes, but now becoming more process driven. Schedules eliminate much of the innovation.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep the ship right until Intel makes a good offer. You will all be well compensated to leave after the acquisition.

Work on real products with great intelligent people

Design Engineer Member of Technical Staff (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA (US)

I have been working at Altera full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIn engineering, you get to be around smart and friendly folks, who focus on problems at hand. Most everyone is aligned towards common goals. Immediate managers and directors are well respected and take care of their teams. You can express your opinion without fear, argue, brainstorm. Not much politics there. There's a variety of projects, most of which make it to production. Recently, there are various fun activities, such as ping-pong or bocce tournaments, volleyball, etc. Good facility and reasonable resources. It is a comfortable environment, and there are many people, who stick around for 10-20 years.

ConsI hear the picture may not be the same outside engineering. Because of lots of long-term and bright folks and small or no growth, the career opportunities are limited. The expectations are high, and it's pretty hard to "exceed" them. The company is very money-conscious, which is good for a corporation, but sometimes feels as penny-pinching. There's always a lot of work to do, and many stay until 7-8 pm, which can become stressful. Some "brain drain" to Google recently. Benefits seem to slowly deteriorate.

Advice to Senior ManagementEnable career opportunities. Grow the company.

Nice place to work

Software Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Altera full-time for more than a year

ProsQuiet, Hardworking, Friendly environment. Everyone gets along and there's a lot of experts within the office which brings the standard of the entire office up.Within the office there are plenty of opportunities outside of work - a football team, badminton, gym on site (uk office) etc.

ConsAs an American company it's often difficult in the UK office to interact with teams from different offices, often the atmosphere feels like the company doesn't value the areas outside of their core IC design and ACDS suite.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate the key goals of each department rather than just the company as a whole. Engineers tend to be left out of the loop when it comes to matters outside of their department and that often causes problems later on.
