Current Employee – been working at American Airlines full-time for more than a year
Pros – Lots and lots of entry and on-going training provided. Can working from home. Ability to shift trade with others for time off or to change work hours. Fantastic travel benefits.
Cons – AA does everything possible to not provide employee's dependents with health benefits. Worst company for that I have ever seen or even heard of, so be aware. Many employees complain of this. Pay for the work skill is way low. If not for the flight benefits not much reason to work for AA due to the low pay and lack of dependent's health coverage.
Advice to Senior Management – The revolving door of training employees only to see them leave would not spin so fast if AA simply stopped trying to NOT provide the offered benefits. I mean really...deny employees families from being added to health plans for every and any reason that MIGHT hold up in court is just over the top. The stalling and searching for excuses is a complete joke.

Current Employee – been working at American Airlines full-time for more than a year
Pros – Travel travel travel! Great corporate culture, everyone has a strong sense of pride for the company and to see it succeed. And not sure if I mentioned this, but Travel benefits are amazing!
Cons – Somewhat of a legacy company so does not use latest technologies and as is normal for most large employers, takes some time for new technologies and ideas to make it up the chain of command and get approved.
Advice to Senior Management – Make it easier for innovative employees to share and implement ideas!

Current Employee – been working at American Airlines full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Friendly people, intellectually stimulating work. Great work / life balance, very nice benefits (insurance and flight priviledges). Good opportunities to work in a variety of departments and roles, regardless of background.
Cons – The annual challenges can be a bit overwhelming, and airlines don't typically pay (salary) at levels that might be obtainable with the same experience and education elsewhere.
Advice to Senior Management – An increase in HR transparency (salaries, opportunities, etc) could benefit us all.

Current Employee – been working at American Airlines
Pros – Free travel in coach after 5 years, no overtime expected, get to work around airplanes
Cons – It's hard to travel standby with a family due to lack of empty seats on planes. The salary for engineers will always be less than the industry average. Lots of paperwork. As an engineer you hit the career ceiling pretty fast unless you go into one of the limited number of supervisory roles.

Former Employee – worked at American Airlines part-time for more than 7 years
Pros – As a Fleet Service Clerk, pay begins at a little over $10 part time (pretty good). You get about a dollar increase each year till you top out (don't recall what the top out is, varies for PT/FT). Seniority is very important - your shift, vacation, and other things go off of it. You have the ability to CS Off or CS Work, which means you can pick up other people's hours or give up your own. In essence, you can create your own unpaid vacations, or work as much as you want to (even as a part timer.) The job itself is really not complicated. Health benefits are quite good considering what most companies offer nowadays. Flight benefits are great to have - but standby travel can be difficult so beware during high seasons. This is a unionized position. There are many internal positions you can apply for, and one has the ability to transfer to other cities if they have openings. In the right environment (and station) the job can be satisfying when you are working with good people and the work gets done the right way.
Cons – -Work can be heavy and frustrating at times
-You may be given a mandatory overtime extension due to weather or other delays.
-Threat of layoff is always present
-Depending on what city you work, some co workers can be VERY difficult to work with, and the higher their seniority, the lazier some can be.
-If you are low on seniority, expect bad days off for several years. Don't expect mornings for a long, long time.
-Seniority is a BIG deal
-Big divide between Union and management
-Though they have gotten better, many members of management are very ignorant and are on constant power trips.
Advice to Senior Management – Hire more managers who have actually worked ramp, and are open to new ideas and innovations.
