Glorified service based not product based BT India

I have been working at BT full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    - N% higher than market salary
    - Flexible work timings
    - Job designation, whatever you ask for
    - Gem of technical resources

    Cons

    - Zero, I really mean it, work life balance for techies. May not be so for managers, who distribute work like reputed postmen and leave for home, henceforth disturbing the balance for technical resources.
    - Too much focus on non-technical Line Managers, who don't even understand a fig of what his reports work on.
    - Fickle and narrow minded lower management, which perceives any performing resource as threat
    - The lure of HR mentioning this as product based org clears in 3-4 weeks as you understand the dynamics of org. Since vendors are still there for BT, working in parallel, so the management asks you to justify your package by comparing only the quantity as they shift-deleted "quality" from their dictionary long time back, while working with vendors like TechM, TCS, Accenture n Infy.
    - Finally, comes the rating system, which evaluates you every quarter and the micro management comes to the fore, wherein you would discussed about tea-breaks, that one sick leave and a bad rating to start with

I have been working at BT full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    1. You will get good pay package if you dare to negotiate more.
    2. Yearly increments better than service companies.
    3. Lot of challenging work and if you enjoy challenges everyday, this is the company to look for.
    4. Highly competent colleagues and work environment.

    Cons

    1. Pay packages are not uniform. It solely depends on previous pay package and negotiation.
    2. Even though challenging work is there, it will not add much to your profile as most of the applications use legacy technologies and the application stack which is been running from more than 10 years is completely out of date.
    3. Dumbest appraisal system I have ever seen. Employees get 4 appraisals a year and each time, we get same rating of - Achieved Standards. irrespective of amount of work done. Even if people are working too hard sacrificing their personal life, they get Achieved Standards as this is what company expects from you. It is really difficult to give importance to such appraisal system.
    4. Management is more business oriented than technology oriented. Whenever they speak, they will talk about reducing cost, increasing profit, revenue - rather than innovation and technology.
    5. So much lateral hiring. Very less chance for promotions within the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Probably, you should go back to vendors. You don't understand how to manage IT crowd in India and insoucing is not your cup to tea.

I have been working at BT full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice culture, flexible timings. Side work is well taken care by company. Good salary. The company is growing but the outlook doesn't look very bright for employees. All the best.

    Cons

Management not approachable. The main work is still done in UK. Competitors are better placed and there is lot to learn there.Appraisals are average.

I worked at BT full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    1) Good package.
    2) Nice gift and celebrations.
    3) Office is at good location

    Cons

Everything else. Where shall I start
    1) India division is a service based company like Infy, TCS. So if you are used to the culture, you can join otherwise big no no.

    2) Not for hardcore technical people. If you can talk well and prepare nice PPTs, this is the place for you.

    3) Regionalism runs amok.

    4) And get ready to get bullied for next several months after you join.

    And the list goes on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sorry it is not "Management", it is "Leadership team". Keep leading.

I have been working at BT full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Good Paymaster
Talented Pool of People - Hiring is done from Premier Institutes
    Good infrastructure
Flexible timings and Remote working options
    Nice team-building and party events

    Cons

    High Work Pressure
Through flexibility, it is ensured that you are available to work 24/7
ALL decisions in the company are politically motivated. Same holds good for appraisals and hikes.
If you have a god-father within the company you can achieve wonders within a short time - Talent and hard work are not sufficient, neither are they necessary.
Lack of well defined company policies for India region - politically powerful employees make best (mis)use of this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure fairness and transparency in all transactions.

I have been working at BT full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Better than average salary.
    - Work from home facility.
    - BT has a good finical sheet, company is doing good money wise.

    Cons

Well there are too many, let's stick with top ones
    - First, you will not be part of BT, you will be like just another vendor, you will be treated like that, you will work like that, you are not more important, you are not less important too.
    - BT need to drop 2 or 3 vendor to hire you, so they will ask you to work like that.
    - Most are hired from vendors(Infy, TechM, Virtusa), work culture is like any other service compony.
    - You need to work with vendors, most of the day, need to visit there offices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - no one listen, so no advantages in saying something.

I have been working at BT full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The salary is decent I suppose. The team dinners are good. And that is just about all I can say that is good about working here.

    Cons

Employees are expected to work on anything and everything. It doesn't really matter if the work aligns to their skill set or not. Blatant lies about the work during interviews. In-sourced projects are really really bad with most of them just having the work of taking over the mess the vendors have created. The in-sourcing vendor employee to BT employee ratio is about 3:1. So one BT employee replaces around 3-4 vendor employees. Too much process to work with in order to do any design/development. Expectations are too high with many people working during their vacations. Line manager is never satisfied and wants people to keep taking more work. Really bad recognition system. The people who make a lot of noise and take credit for other people's work are the best performers. A huge disconnect between what the immediate line manager expects and what the higher ups in UK expect. Line manager does not want to listen to any problems that you might be having. Just wants the work done. There is a lot of fancy managerial talk giving lip-service about career growth and learning plans and blah blah but in the end it is made sure that you are loaded with work to about 2 times your capacity so that you don't have time to do any of those things. No infrastructure at all. There's no food available in the cafeteria and there's no transportation. Work from home is available for only one day in a month.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are going to see a large outflow of people soon if nothing is done about the constant work pressure and unjust expectations. Your "anonymous" surveys are manipulated.

I have been working at BT full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

They have decent work, can be a good learning experience if you are willing to sacrifice all your time for BT and have no other work and a decent salary.

    Cons

They really wont have any work life balance , people who prefer a work life balance shouldn't join here.. You should be a show man to get into the eyes of the management and take all the credit for other work. The worst working environment i have ever worked in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to retain people for longer please start thinking about work life balance, people welfare and not only the deliverable in projects which sometime might be far too stretched for a person or even for a group.
