Old Bank, New Blood -- VERY interesting mix

Intern (Current Employee)
New York, NY (US)

I have been working at Bank of New York Mellon part-time for less than a year

ProsGreat co-workers
Fun Environment
Laid-Back Atmosphere

I find it to be a great and laid back place where it is easy to work and get along with people. Everyone is friendly and approachable and BNYM has great potential for growth.

ConsLow Pay
Lots of miss communications

Often times I found myself lost and kept out of the loop on some minor things. Some people aren't driven and at times its discouraging

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

ProsTechnology aware company that is always implementing new and innovative improvements. Really good benefits.

ConsNot a lot of advancement or room to grow. No raises while I was there. Having to take 2 weeks vacation at a time was disappointing.

Looking to outsource and cut costs- no opportunity for growth here

Fund Accountant (Current Employee)

I have been working at Bank of New York Mellon full-time for more than 3 years

ProsStaff is awesome, awesome management, good people.

ConsYour boss and your boss's boss's hands are tied when it comes to promotions and raises. No one knows when people are going to get let go. they're looking to outsource to other countries and downsize departments... not a good place to be right now.

Interesting and challenging role as Fund Administrator

Fund Administrator (Former Employee)
Manchester, England (UK)

I worked at Bank of New York Mellon full-time for more than a year

ProsThe career development is really good established, as there are many training programmes that you can attend to get new skills. The work-life balance is supported well, and there are some exciting opportunities for volunteering.

ConsThe remuneration was much less compared to the industry average. It depends on location, but some of the people didn't have enough educational background though were doing job well.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company could find better employees from overseas by offering work permit.

Conservative company, low pay raises, hard to get promoted, slow-paced

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Bank of New York Mellon

ProsWork/life balance because it is so slow-paced. You can take your time with anything and get away with it.

ConsThe company is stuck 20 years back and completely siloed and confused. People who join become lifers because they have been there for decades. Extremely conservative, disorganized, with low pay raises and hard to get promotions (since no one leaves and no one needs to be replaced). The bank keeps acquiring more businesses but is horrible at making them work together.

Entry Level Position

Senior Fund Accountant (Current Employee)
Everett, MA (US)

I have been working at Bank of New York Mellon full-time for more than 3 years

ProsDown to Earth atmosphere, can gain insight on numerous financial instruments, will see a solid foundation into the real world of finance & accounting from a custodial point of view. Tuition reimbursement available as long as other benefits.

ConsA Limited focus on individuals development tracks. Paths and opportunities are present, BUT there is a lack of both time and guidance from upper level employees in assisting one to meet their goals. Success does happen but it's sometimes difficult to get there. Salary is par at best. Dedication isn't rewarded and poor performance isn't acknowledged enough.

Advice to Senior ManagementStep 1 - Management should become more involved in what the staff they manage does on a daily basis. Step 2 - Managers should praise where deserved and increase awareness to those whom aren't meeting expectations.
