I worked at Ciena full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Salary is competitive. Good co-works. New technology

    Cons

The upper management does not know what they are doing. Short term focused and all are about making themselves rich.

I have been working at Ciena full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - If you're lucky, you'll end up with colleagues you want to spend weekday and some weekends with!
    - Work/Life balance & benefits (health, DCPP, etc)
    - Ottawa/Carling campus is beautiful
    - Ever-growing; New challenges always around the corner to keep your mind stimulated
    - The company is on a growth trajectory currently which means new projects, more customers which ensures job stability/security
    - Growth also gives way for [hopefully] more frequent & larger bonuses and opportunity to move within firm

    Cons

    - Unpredictable work volume
    - The number of new challenges you must overcomes grows everyday; You need a wicked memory
    - Unspoken rules, "mandatory" 44 hour work week BS!
    - No raises, no compensation aside from base salary and overtime if you qualify
    - Bonuses and raises are a joke/non-existent
    - Very few opportunities for new-grads to progress in terms of career development

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should not ignore current employees, especially those who are relatively new (2-4 years) when it's time to award compensation/raises. This does not promote loyalty and leaves very little incentive to stick around.

I have been working at Ciena full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

With a minute exception, the leadership team is solid and focussed. If you are in need of support, you can find the right person(s) or get pointed in the right direction. The company is supportive of growth and individual development towards a career goal.

    Cons

Too many "rocks" that slows the company's growth.

I worked at Ciena as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Great Place to work at. Very friendly and extremely helpful co-workers. Lots of opportunities to learn new stuff. Would recommend a friend to apply.

    Cons

Need appropriate training and guidance for interns and co-ops. Should be immensely independent and be willing and skilful to manage tasks on our own.

I have been working at Ciena full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexibility. International Presence. Company seems to be growing

    Cons

Ciena is not a place that will enhance your technical skills. Its a place to do some legacy ownership, and light work. The technical teams are Disorganized, disconnected. This mainly happens because most of the quality work is off-shored, with major control given to off shore teams. The vibes hence is on buying specialized skills from outside rather than build technical expertise, within, but in reality these specialized skills have little experience, and quite little tendency to share the work, or transfer knowledge to those internal to team. Less transparency and reliability witnessed on the culture of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Building internal skills always helps long run. But if outsourcing is the path chosen by company, it maybe a better idea to hire internship managers who can manage this team. Technical people would obviously expect an enhancement of their technical skills, and its only fair hence not to hire them.

I have been working at Ciena full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There is absolutely no good reason to be employed here. They treat their employees horribly and have taken nearly their entire workforce off-shore, calling themselves "a U.S. based company". Decietful liars. No bonuses to those that tow the line.

    Cons

Selfish management, no work life balance, slave-like atmosphere. Management takes care of only themselves. I have been dragged all over the planet performing my job above expectations and I have not received a raise or bonus in two+ years of employment here. This place is absolutely horrible and I do not recommend emplyment here. I came over from Nortel Networks where employees were treated with dignity and respect. Ciena is selfless and selfish.
