ProsJob security, good life work balance scope to increase your knowledge and skill

Conslow pay and too many deductions make the same wage as a 1st year apprentice in the private sector. Pension benefits are low to retiring employees. pension scheme not very transparent plans to increase retirement age to 67 years

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow vertical progression of lower employees too many road blocks for promotions.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Edmonton, AB (Canada)

Current Employee – been working at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 7 years

Pros-Very flexible work schedule with every third Friday off
-Able to bring in lots of new technology
-Excellent support from management (at the branch level)

Cons-Capital budgets are becoming more restrictive and the ability to introduce new technology quickly is less likely
-No real consistent career path unless you want to move into management and away from a technical role
-No way to plan as one cycle your may have a tsunamai of funds and the next nothing

Advice to Senior ManagementReturn to the every second Friday off for management staff and create an engineering ladder that more accurately lines up with APEGA.

Edmonton, AB (Canada)

Former Employee – worked at City of Edmonton full-time for more than a year

Pros- Great coworkers, they really help make work fun
- Consistent Hours
- Immediate management is constructive, approachable and friendly
- Decent wage

Cons- Senior management is often distant, if not completely inaccessible
- Management is slow to enact changes
- The city is too keen to enact broad policies without considering the impact they will have for employees

Advice to Senior ManagementBecome more accessible to average employees (reply to emails maybe?) and take the time to understand what an average day looks like for employees so you can better understand their concerns.

ProsWas always treated fairly and professionally. Received an abundance of feedback, especially when I asked for it. The people and staff were well trained in dealing with people...very refreshing. An enjoyable work experience.

ConsTypical government bureauacracy, but this is to be expected...it's the same everywhere. I just went with the flow and everything was fine.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work. The management here is more advanced than any other local government where I have worked. Communication level is good.

ProsOne of the best work to pay ratio's on the market. A growing government undergoing a massive transformation at all levels. This presents many growth opportunities for the willing. IT department is extremely progressive in very traditional industry. If you want to improve Edmonton, this is the best place to do it. Compensation is above average and every second Friday/Monday off is a very nice addition.

ConsTypical government red tape. Like most government jobs the high performers do not get top dollar compared to private companies and but work just as long. Budgets are tied to city budgets, therefore planning out professional development can be tricky.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep being more progressive. The youth of the organization really love this.

Edmonton, AB (Canada)

Current Employee – been working at City of Edmonton

ProsLots of room to move around and/or up, security of unionized strucutre, benefits and compensation are slightly above average for most people (although if you're a high performer it won't compare with private industry)

Conslike most governments environments its a bureaucracy, its easy to lose focus on what you're trying to do with your career, the work can sometimes be mundane if your manager is not on top of planning projects, etc.

Advice to Senior Managementproject management is key to keep people engaged and challenged.
