An Independent Workplace

Radio Show Intern (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA (US)

I worked at Clear Channel as an intern for less than a year

ProsPros are as follows (working for a station): you get to have the opportunity to be on the radio, work with a close knit of people, get free food from sponsors, and have the chance to meet famous people.

ConsCons are as follows (working for a station): you work independently and sometimes communication gets lost in the bunch of emails or other means of communications.

Totally Dysfunctional

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Madison, WI (US)

I have been working at Clear Channel full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat co-workers, lively and interesting environment, lots of free food, foam soap in the bathrooms, occasionally get to meet semi-famous people and politicians.

ConsNo opportunity for advancement, the management are disorganized, no one seems to be happy with their job except a few on-air talent. The sales department is extremely dysfunctional and disorganized. The whole place feels like a sinking ship.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot sure if you need to do some kind of week long retreat on how to be good managers or if you all need to just be moved to other markets away from each other.

Tough place to work

Account Manager (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL (US)

I worked at Clear Channel full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat properties to sell. Clear Channel offers amazing resources and training opportunities

ConsVery little thought to the individual and LOTS of paperwork. They are more concerned with managing the processs than closing the sale. Too many different agendas/initiatives to follow and they seen to change on an almost weekly basis.

Clear Channel is full of great people who feel powerless

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Clear Channel

ProsGreat employees who want to be a success, smart, creative people.

ConsCorporate doesn't seem to notice/care about Minneapolis because we don't live in NY, LA, Tampa or Chicago.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake some time to learn more about employees, what drives them, many do just enough for senior managers.

I learned what I needed to learn to be competent in the broadcast industry on the radio side.

Promotions Intern (Former Employee)
Asheville, NC (US)

I worked at Clear Channel as an intern for less than a year

ProsFun coworkers
Always something happening
Never a dull moment
I really enjoyed my time interning here, and it just reinforced my love of radio. Even the tasks I didn't particularly like taught me something.

ConsMost everyone I worked with appeared to be on-call. I didn't see a lot of team meetings or other structured time for people to get on the same page. Exchange of information appeared to happen informally in the jock lounge whenever people ran into each other.

If you respect yourself, do not work for CC.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Clear Channel part-time for more than 7 years

ProsFree Food, drinks, tickets to concerts and events. There really isn't that much to say, it really is that bad.

ConsToo many managers that never show up to work. Lack of communication and consistency. Managers are more worried about their own job and bottom line to care about a human life. Working the jobs of 3 people for half of one person's salary. Every CC station is a sinking ship. Get off now. Even if you are friendly with your boss and management, you will still get fired. The benefits are terrible.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou're too late on I heart radio. Hire more women in management positions.

If you have the drive to win, you will have all the support and resources you need to achieve your goals.

Sales (Current Employee)
San Diego, CA (US)

I have been working at Clear Channel full-time for more than 8 years

ProsFor a sales person, lots of tools and support available. Better resources than any other radio group locally or nationally. You can create your own destiny and can create your own wins. It is not easy to work here, but the culture is not designed to reward people who what “easy.” If you want a challenge and to be paid for true sales performance, this is a great place.

ConsYou must want to work hard and have a lot of will to win. They have more resources, but they also have more responsibilities. If you want to do radio like it has been done in the past, this is NOT the place for you. But if you want to really sell and be paid well for selling big ideas, this IS the place for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to reward the high-performers. Take care of the ones creating the wins. Don't mourn for those that leave becasue they want it "easy."

Dying Business Dying Business Dying Business

Bropadcaster (Current Employee)
Boston, MA (US)

I have been working at Clear Channel full-time for more than 10 years

ProsRadio used to be so much fun and was very rewarding but not any more. There are really no jobs left and those that are really don't pay like they used to.

ConsStaffing is at an all time low, morale is completely gone, everyone knows that it is all over. Really very sad now.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey won't listen so why bother.
