    Pros

-work/life balance is good, for the most part. most people work 8-5, the parking lot is cleared out by 6.
-on-site gym is good, though not spectacular (would have expected a little more from a sporting goods company ). towel service is included!!!
    -friendly employees, great culture
-facilities are very new, cubicles are spacious
    -yearly sample sale is terrific.
-growing store base rapidly, unlike most retailers
-Pittsburgh is actually a great city to live in
    -non-competitive and relaxed culture
-cool marketing campaigns and partnership with ESPN

    Cons

-work/life balance is dependent on position. you could have the same title as someone else and be working 50% more.
-remote location by the airport is not the best. long commute from the city and still 15 minutes away from food/shops.
-very few minorities (black, hispanic, asian). the corporate office is probably 95% white.
-low salaries and limited vacation days
-college hires are a mixed bag in terms of talent. 80% is composed of fashion merchandising majors who couldn't get jobs at real fashion companies (Gap, Macy's, JCrew, etc.) and can't do math, marketing majors who can't do math, and finance majors who can't do math (because if you were a finance major who could do math, you probably would have had a real finance job offer and be making a lot more money), or in a few cases, unabashed nepotism. 20% are actually talented and move up quickly or leave.
-corporate office looks down with contempt at the store organization. there have been many attempts to fix this, but the holier-than-thou attitude is still pervasive (I once heard someone repeatedly refer to store employees as "monkeys")
    -some outdated technologies
-just FYI, you are not working in "sports", you are working in retail.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-increase salaries to obtain better talent. the attraction of working in "sports" only goes so far.

    Pros

Working out of the HQ office was a wonderful experience and a great work environment. People are generally very positive and fun to work with. They love to live the brand and working out during lunch hour is totally normal and encouraged.

    Cons

Compensation was low starting out. The only room for advancement is within the Pittsburgh office. Few opportunities elsewhere. Poor graduate program sponsorship.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase compensation and rewards for employees. You have a great office mentality set up but you lose talent on the fundamentals of how much money employees bring home at the end of the day. Was the lowest paid salary when looking at offers out of college.

    Pros

The overall product and goals behind company is great! I enjoy working when it's a good day and things run smooth.

    Cons

Communication between upper level management, mangers, to employees seems to lack quite a bite. Mangers wait till the last minute to complete tasks on their due date rather on scheduled time. Dicks Sporting Goods as a whole seems to value their employees as "replaceable" rather an "Assets" to the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In my position, I am not offered a ton of time off due to no one being able to cover for me. At times, I worked more than some of the mangers to make my life easier. My biggest advice would be to make sure you continuously see what is going on in the store and walk the floor. There seems to be a disconnect on what employees actually do and say we never do anything. The BIGGEST help would be to actually value your employees and recognize employee of the month, defender of the month more and make it a big deal. The system they have set up as the "WOW board" is super bias to the point employees find it to be a joke.

    Former Employee - Apparel Associate

    Pros

the attire was awesome, the managers were great, co workers were great, it was a really mellow job at times and helping people during the holidays was a lot of fun.

    Cons

You WILL get fired if you use your associate discount EVER, for anyone besides spouse and children.
The responsibility falls on the shoulders of whoever is willing to do it. Expectations and policies are not clearly defined, neither are consequences for people's actions at store level, associates slide through the radar without being noticed and then the people who corporate compute aren't adequate are the ones who get fired

    Pros

Great managers (obviously varies by store)
    Comfortable work attire
    Friendly coworkers
    Nice store discount

    Cons

Customers are pretty demanding, will jump on you if they feel like you're lacking in any way
The store is pretty large, knowing where everything is will take a while
A lot of things to learn at first. Overwhelming but eventually gets better
Hours can be pretty early, as early as 5am for shipment

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing so far, really enjoying how they treat their employees in the company! The managers are really upfront with wanting employees to be attentive to customers and to work hard everyday, which they in turn use to base hours and overall respect. Great company values.
