I worked at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 8 years

ProsI was given so many great opportunities - from growing in my career to having a great work/life balance. This company leads the pack. Now after working at other networks, it's amazing how technologically advanced this company is.

ConsEvery few years it seems like they layoff a great bunch of talented people

Great environment, lots of restructuring

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 3 years

ProsAbility to work autonomously. Great environment, good people. Work is challenging. They promote a lot from within. Benefits (including a nice yearly bonus) are fantastic, such as maternity/parental leave, on site gym or fitness reimbursement (for offices without a gym), company-wide volunteer day.

ConsA lot of restructuring occurring, generally with annual layoffs. Same amount of work but less people to do it. They are moving more towards contract positions which means you continually have to train and work with new people who don't know the process and don't meet the same standards as full time employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementCome up with a long term plan and stick to it.

It was a good work-life balance, but not challenging enough

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Discovery Communications part-time

ProsGreat location/easy commute with metro
Very flexible work hours for full time students
Awesome company, with access to a huge media network

ConsNot much emphasis on career development
Not enough challenging projects
No commuter reimbursement

Advice to Senior ManagementMost Interns commute from DC, which ends up being about $7 a day in metro fares or $80+ per month of parking in your garage. Consider reimbursing students who car-pool or take the metro.

Discovery takes advantage of younger employees paying lower salaries.

Producer/Editor (Former Employee)
Silver Spring, MD (US)

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 10 years

ProsCompany has great name recognition. It was once a very fun filled company but has since grown to strictly value ratings and bottom line over the value of its core which is employees.

ConsThe company has become so very corporate that it has lost its spirit and failed to celebrate the most important resource - the employees.

Terrible management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Discovery Communications full-time

Prosgood benefits, good pay, flex hours.

ConsManagement has absolutely no idea what they are doing. Basically the prototypical bad managers who are knowitalls who dont share any information, dont lead their employees and dont encourage growth or development. After positions opened up offering opportunities for lateral career development, I was informed through hearsay that the director did not want to fill these positions from within the company. There is no possibility of career advancement, despite much lip-service being paid to it.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a management class.

Great Place To Hang Your Hat, Until It Isn't

Director (Former Employee)
Atlanta, GA (US)

I worked at Discovery Communications full-time for more than 3 years

ProsWork with some of the smartest people in the industry, trust and be trusted. The larger organization seems to finally be getting on board with the digital age. More attention is being given digital properties and innovation with respect to new products is surfacing from within.

ConsThis is an old (relative to digital) company and many of their business practices are still closely tied to non-digital. They need help seeing through to the future where a new business model must be embraced as consumers are ditching traditional cable at ever quicker rates.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees have come to expect layoffs in the spring and in the fall of each year. This contributes to lower morale for all employees. Not just the ones potentially laid off, but also those left behind to wonder if they are next.

It appears that one of the factors in frequent house cleanings is related to the continual churning in executive management. A repeat pattern of:

* Hire new executive who spends 6 months figuring out what changes they want to make.
* Meanwhile, staff is continuing to try business as usual with lowered morale until the changes are made.
* Organization is changed (people are laid off) and the remaining staff must march is a slightly different direction with fewer people.
* Once the teams are finally getting into the groove, another executive is changed and the team is put back into the same loop again (hoping for a better resolution).

These transitions break down relationships, morale and innovation within the company. They are wasteful of time in six month blocks.

Executive management should try and limit the changes to executive teams by getting at the root of what makes them move on. Are they not performing and the team is just looking for the right people? Or are they moving on to ever higher and higher paychecks?
