Run from this place. The culture will eat your soul.

Associate (Current Employee)
New York, NY (US)

I have been working at E*TRADE Financial full-time for more than 3 years

ProsOK benefits, nothing special. Cafeteria in building. Nice location in midtown. Company sounds cool on a resume.

ConsNever experienced such a hostile work environment in all of my career. Culture of every man for himself and zero accountability. Peter Principle in full effect here. Majority of employees find themselves in the middle of the "blame game", having to constantly defend themselves from verbally abusive coworkers. Some of these known repeat offenders are completely out of control. HR mentality seems to encourage this behavior. People with real skill and talent will never be rewarded at this company. Morale is low, heads are down, and people avoid eye contact. Stress is high, tension is thick, and good people jump ship at the first opportunity.

Advice to Senior ManagementLongevity does not equate to capability. The whole of the executive suite is a nightmare to deal with- from the laughably incompetent secretaries to the disconnected executives who clearly only care about their paychecks. This trickle down effect sets the tone for the rest of the office, and is unfortunately making the company a very unpleasant place to work.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

E*Trade Manila call center

Senior Financial Representative (Former Employee)
Sandy, UT (US)

I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time for more than 3 years

Prosstrong emphasis on technology, latest trading technologies, advanced trading platform, global trading.

ConsLack of accountability and disconnectedness of operations in Manilla. Inability to contact operations directly to jointly resolve escalated problems. Strong emphasis on cost savings through brokers in Manilla who frequently misunderstand words in English. Clients only get to speak with Americans once they become frustrated with Manilla reps.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat employees with more respect. Randomly demanding mandatory overtime on weekends or other inconvenient times puts demands on employees that are worth more than just being paid overtime pay. Trying to motivate employees to do more work for free by calling work a "game" insults employee intelligence as employees are there to make a living and do not work to play games. More incentives are needed for additional work requirements as this is not a cost savings strategy.

It is a "hot mess" right now - avoid.

Systems Administrator (Former Employee)
Alpharetta, GA (US)

I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time for more than 7 years

ProsReasonable hours, lack of any deadlines. New CEO is at least trying to break through the walls that protect those who refuse to embrace change and prevent innovation.

ConsEntire senior management group has left (note this could be seen as a pro, but it remains to be seen.) Remaining managers have dug in like the battle of the Somme. Very little chance to grow or learn new technologies. Most good employees have left and those that remain are shell-shocked.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep on pushing change. It may have to go all the way to the lowest levels of management before the job is done. Bring in new blood at all levels of management.

You need the right position

Broker/Customer Service (Former Employee)
Jersey City, NJ (US)

I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThere are some advancement opportunities. The pay is competitive but will likely be on the lower than average range.

ConsIf you're stuck in the wrong position (customer service), you will hate life. If that's you, apply to any/all openings you qualify for and hope that some hiring manager saves you. Otherwise, it'll wreck your psyche.

Advice to Senior ManagementEase up on the csr. The job is hell and you're not exactly paying a premium to attract the best talent.
