Former Employee - Mid-Level in Portland, OR (US)

I worked at Edelman full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-Constant challenges, diversity of experiences, access to top talent across the globe, lots of interesting IP comes out
-Many leaders outside the local office are fantastic and have become trusted mentors

    Cons

-Local management has created a fear-based culture
    -Constant turnover
-Lots of drama and rumors, gossip
-Management attempts to be transparent, but it is completely inauthentic
-The best leaders leave; ditto for staff members (generally)
-Local leadership tends to be filled out by staff who, frankly, are socially awkward, work with their doors shut nearly all of the time and treat work as if the office is life and death (people absolutely lose their passion here and the majority have one foot out the door)
    -Training became a joke
-Technology is old and IT support is poor (the local IT guy was great, but we rarely had access to him)
-Work-life balance absolutely does not exist in this office
-Company as a whole can move as slow as molasses
-Can be incredibly arrogant and judgy of other agencies/companies/clients
    -Salary is not competitive
-Someone in tears nearly every week (if not more)
-Not a level playing field - feels like "friends" are promoted and granted ridiculous awards
-Lack of professionalism from local management - inappropriate remarks made in front of office was not unusual (and they wondered why people were so quiet in meetings!)
-Weekly happy hours are a joke - felt very "forced" and the senior leaders clearly didn't want to participate (ditto for the holiday breakfast they would grudgingly make)
-Social media efforts of local office are a joke; everything has to be approved and it's obvious. So "corporatized" it's ineffective

    I worked at Edelman full-time

    Pros

Great Company to work for and grow in. Interesting and compelling work. Brilliant and creative stuff happening over there. Some great people to work side by side with. Beautiful office in NYC.

    Cons

Weird, mental and emotional manipulation attempted repeatedly by managers and directors. Some people want you to succeed because that means everyone succeeds, but some people (mainly in leadership) want to crush you. I've never experienced anything like it. Even after I left, I continued to receive snarky, unprofessional, and unprompted emails and correspondence with managers and directors. But at least It made me feel even more confident in my decision to leave Edelman.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Require managers to take management classes or management training so they don't behave like evil villains. Especially the ones who have been around for a long time and consistently proven to have outdated and inefficient management techniques and approaches.

    Pros

Great pay, learning opportunities, smart managers, great opportunity to learn for those starting their careers.

    Cons

Bad behavior by senior management is rewarded with promotions if it means the client is happy, very poor work / life balance, silo'd work structure leads to in-fighting over client service, junior employees are exposed to some poor management behaviors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Protect the younger employees, who are excited to be there and learn, from managers who behave badly. You may be creating more bad behavior because they see it's acceptable and encouraged (via promotions).

    Pros

Great atmosphere and culture, nice office. Collegues are very nice and there is a "family" feel. Good standard benefits.

    Cons

Management tries their very best to get away with giving the lowest salaries possible. When you do get a raise, it's minimal. They say they "can't", but truth is they won't.
No significant growth opportunities. Ideas to improve the process or structure are dismissed.
Under the surface there are little battles taking place between employees, management does not seem to want to resolve these and avoids them by telling individuals what they want to hear to keep them happy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees more about what they think.
Don't treat junior staff like slaves.

I have been working at Edelman

    Pros

Edelman has good opportunities for growth if you are aggressive and push hard for advancement. It has a wide network of offices and specialty practices and managers are usually open to transfer requests. Company encourages professional growth and education. Employees are smart, dedicated, and hard working - everyone brings something unique to the table at Edelman and clients are served very well.

    Cons

Work is demanding, the hours are long and salaries are low compared to industry standards. Focus is on increasing profits. Easy to get lost in the company if you don't make the effort to network and stand out, there are plenty of others that can take your place. Company touts work/life balance but workloads and local managers don't support that. Day-to-day contact with local executives/GMs is very limited and they are not in touch with what's happening in local offices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Local executive management should provide more oversight to local senior management, encourage work/life balance.

Current Employee - Assistant Account Executive in Shanghai, Shanghai (China)
Current Employee - Assistant Account Executive in Shanghai, Shanghai (China)

I have been working at Edelman full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Edelman offers everything any entry-level worker could ask for from a large, established company: building and sharpening basic writing and professional skills, opportunities to network and establish meaningful professional relationships with clients, media and vendors across a wide range of industries, and a good balance of tasks requiring research, analysis, and creativity. Add to that an extensive worldwide network with opportunities for international transfer and exchanges, world-class thought leadership and IPs, and an inspiring global leadership team, Edelman truly stands out as a near perfect company for kick starting just about any career, related to PR or not.

    Cons

The hierarchical structure often influences work culture and the office in Shanghai has little to no interaction outside of work. Team bonding activities are rare, though teams do tend to be close after surviving insane stretches of late nights at the office. Compensation is minimal, but again, for an entry level position it could be worse. Lastly, though the lack of work-life balance is part of any agency's work culture, Edelman truly values delivering quality work to clients above all else, even if that means occasionally sacrificing the health of those providing the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At the Shanghai office, more opportunities for mentorship would be greatly appreciated. Recent HR initiatives to encourage friendly competition between teams have received positive feedback as well as requests to amp up these sorts of campaigns.
