I have been working at Autonomy

Pros

Management knows the way to get the best profit for the company. Great sales force that gets the products sold to the customers.

Cons

Non-Silicon Valley working culture. One way communication from the top. Recognition is minimal. No performance review. Employees are not shared with the company direction and vision. Upper management doesn't seem to be interested in employee feedback. Employees are assigned with tasks as it goes and told to work on them with no question asked, and yet, direction changes often and is confusing.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Besides selling the product, spend some time to listen more to all employee feedback.

    Pros

    Above industry average compensation, good benefits, core product is strong, good brand name recognition

    Cons

    unusually closed corporate culture, minimum communication from senior and mid-management to the field team, very tactical field management, no sales territories, multiple reps will be frequently chasing the same account

    By adopting more mainstream management and field organization structure you can grow this business much further.

    I have been working at Autonomy

    Pros

    Incredible technology and demonstrated thought leaders in the area of information retrieval. The markets are kind to this company, with a truly blue chip customer list.

    Cons

    Sales operations are a mess, enterprise software sales professionals beware - the arrogance of upper management is off the charts. They believe anyone can sell the complexity of enterprise software to complex organizations if they have access to simple, generic demonstrations shown over and over again to prospects - build it and they will come!. Consultative sales, teamwork, collaborative environments, access to technical resources, lead generation, product management, product marketing, customer support - are simply ignored with a pervasive attitude throughout the organization of "Oh well, it is what it is". If you like to micro-managed with little support - this is the place to be!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Think about the way you treat the sales professionals ( and the others) in the organization, how this impacts the customers and the long-term ability to cross-sell and up-sell. If you build the right sales support systems, the future is bright. Otherwise the churn and burn attitude will eventually spell doom for this company.
