I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Usually fun, like-minded co-workers; good discounts; great for people who like interaction and being up on their feet.

Cons

Minimal hours available to part-timers; stores frequently understaffed due to lack of hours; may become repetitive or boring to some.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

In store management is typically doing their best with what they've got to work with, and the organization doesn't seem too top heavy.

I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

You get a discount on books, which is nice if you like reading. You also get the inside scoop on the new and upcoming releases.

    Cons

The pay is aweful, even compard to other retail jobs in the area. I started at minimum wage, and if you well, you can get a 25 cent raise every year. The maximum raise you can get is only 50 cents per hour, once per year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You say you value employees, but that is not reflected in your pay.

I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Individual stores can create positive workplace, flexible hours (as long as you're prepared to work weekends), decent retail environment

    Cons

Lack of full time openings as they've actually removed a lot of these positions, lack of hours (be prepared to work with fewer people than you should be), and every other con that goes along with any retail position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company needs to work on allowing for more hours, customers get mad when they can't find help, and it gets frustrating having to work with too few people. Customer service requires customers being able to GET service.
