Not the old Cisco

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Cisco Systems

ProsWorking with a wide variety of technologies and vertical markets (keeps it interesting and provides opportunity to mitigate economic cycles). Great name and brand to be associated with. The majority of individual contributor employees are team players and want to help you make the company successful.

ConsInternal processes are suffocating. Funding cuts and headcount freezes, and layoffs w/o back-fill are stifling progress. Promotions appear to go to leaders who manage-up, play manipulative politics and shamelessly self-promote at the expense of their teams. There is little reward/recognition for building strong teams and developing your people. Meeting people who bought the stock at $80, $50, or $30.

Advice to Senior ManagementPurging the badly conceived boards and councils is a good step, but unfortunately much of the damage has been done to unravel the culture of innovation and empowerment. Micro-management IBM-style financial controls are causing much of the customer and employee pain - give more decision power to those closes to the customer. Cisco-on-Cisco IT used to be a great source of pride and a great reference and proof point for our customers; dysfunctional assimilation of Tandberg is a prime example. HR systems are overly complicated and don't contribute to employee satisfaction.

London Bridge is falling down

Software Engineer III (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA (US)

I have been working at Cisco Systems

Pros: Decent pay, telecommunication options, benefits, etc. Loads and loads of… Cons: I joined CIsco 3+ years ago and have been seeing the company unraveling before my very eyes. Reason you ask ? > Incompetent Senior Executives > Too much… Advice to Senior Management: Stop looking upwards, or at least try to make it not that obvious. If your team is happy and performing, you'll get the push you… No, I would not recommend this company to a friend More

Good place but becoming very corporate and now having to reinvent itself

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Cisco Systems

Pros: Good benefits - lots of meaningful work, very high quality… Cons: Becoming too large and high overhead - brings some of the usual slowness and some bonehead policies. … Advice to Senior Management: Start to empower people closer to the ground, focus more on teams… More
