Former Employee - Technical Leader in Kansas City, MO (US)

I worked at GE Oil & Gas full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunity for growth within company or across businesses. Excellent benefits. Promotes personal growth through training and tuition reimbursement. Though business segment was sold, GE still mandated benefit levels for at least first year.

    Cons

There were numerous accounts of individuals who would not recognize cost savings or design change benefits unless it was their idea. Not a terrible thing since they would wait about twelve months and submit idea for large monetary bonus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just because someone doesn't have a degree, don't overlook the talent.

I have been working at GE Oil & Gas full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    1. Career opportunities. The humongous size of GE allows you to rotate to different functions, divisions, businesses and geographical locations much easier than if you work in any other company.
    2. Work-life balance. The company generally respects your personal life and private time. They often organise activities, outings and lunches for employees
    3. Higher management. GE is ranked one of the top companies for leaders for obvious reason. They really choose the right people and invest in them. The managers seem to care about your professional career and well-being in GE
    4. Benefits. The health insurance coverage is AWESOME. Enough said
    5. International exposure. You will definitely work with colleagues of other nationalities, serve multinational clients and even have the chance to travel for work or training
    6. Respect. The don't really care about your gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic background, nationality, etc. As long as you are a good worker and decent individual, you won't find any big problems
    7. Challenges. There are so many opportunities for personal growth by trying new responsibilities and the environment is very supportive of you to try new things

    Cons

Not that bad. Mostly minor stuff that you can definitely put up with:
    1. Salary. Relatively small for the amount of work you have to put in.
    2. Time difference. Working in an international company also requires you to correspond early in the morning or late at night sometimes
    3. Bureaucracy. So many workflows, regulations, processes. At least they are trying to "simplify" the processes now
    4. Legacy systems. IT systems can be old or complicated. Take time for you to adjust. Try to be nice with the IT people or those who are good with the data/database/systems/programs. They will be your saviours in time of need!
    5. Sink or swim. When you start working here, you have to proactively ask questions and get to know people. Most importantly, you have to independently learn on how to do your work. I think this is the hardest part of working at GE O&G

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Speed up the simplification process and IT system revamp please!
