    Pros

They still have some of the core business that they acquired through EDS.

    Cons

hp had no business experience with EDS, yet they bought us anyway. You cannot manage a services company the same was as manufacturing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the $2B budget to maintain your private jet fleet and learn how to run a services company before you decide to trash the rest of them.

A great company with dedicated employees, somewhat hampered by top-heavy management.

    Pros

Meg Whitman has brought some stability and made sensible moves to bring the company around after the last few disastrous CEOs.
It is possible to follow a technical career path that is valued and respected within HP, which in my experience is comparatively rare.
There are plenty of real experts in this company who have been around a long time.
There are plenty of world-class learning / training opportunities.

    Cons

HP is still reeling from the effects of a run of bad CEOs, notably the Hurd era where rampant short-termism ran amok to please those "investors" of the parasitic, asset-stripping mentality.
There's quite a bit of dead wood, especially in middle management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to hang onto your good folks.
A bit more investment up front - especially in staff whilst trying to build up businesses - saves a lot of firefighting and embarrassment later (tbh I've not worked for *any* company that really appreciated this, even with the wealth of HP).
