I have been working at Huron Consulting Group full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Best of the brightest and dedicated leaders that really care about the person and the business.

Cons

none noted so far, would like to see the 'small company' mentality still continued. Monthly office lunches or birthday celebrations with a cake, etc. Small things.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

continue to pay top performers whether internal or client facing - top bonuses and compensations.

Former Employee - Management Consulting Manager in Chicago, IL (US)

I worked at Huron Consulting Group full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Base pay is competitive and fair. Company funded parties are great (1990's WorldCom style)! A lot of motivated young people with solid academic accomplishment.

    Cons

A very negative culture, and significant lack of integrity and leadership at the Managing Director level. I was shocked and appalled by the arrogance and crude behavior of some of the MD's. They manage the practice like a fraternity. Moreover, I was surprised by their overall lack of professional accomplishment and technical skill. There is little or no structure and transparency in the management of the consulting practices. There is no formula for bonuses (it's 100% discretionary) and a mostly undefined performance review process. The consulting assignments in the Higher Ed practice are insignificant and unfulfilling.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start recruiting a few senior level leaders from A.T. Kearney, Booz or BCG and build a more professional and competent core of Managing Directors and Directors. Allow for the development of a strong HR function with transparent processes that everyone relies on.

I have been working at Huron Consulting Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The staff includes some bright and committed people, ongoing training is a priority and taken seriously

    Cons

Heavy hierarchy of management, everyone is a supervisor, which creates an environment of micro management and overly critical reviews (eg. specific verbiage used on the phone is critiqued). Hard headed management has the "with us or against us" attitude. Good people leave with no counter offer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the levels of management...teams of 8 don't need 3 supervisors. Stop focusing on 15 min increments of billable time, it creates too much overhead. Treat experienced hires as such, they don't need to trained and monitored like 22 year old recent college graduates.
