Current Employee - Operations in Austin, TX (US)

I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Online learning modules and lots of training, mentoring program, opportunities to cross-train, management and HR pretty good (I've seen a lot worse). Good local leaders (Austin).

Cons

Too much focus on short term goals/quarterly numbers. Sub-cultures within Life Tech (i.e. Ion) are very different and cause high level of stress and frustration. Too much bureaucracy and people to go through for approvals of basic tasks. IT support is terrible - 3 plus weeks to get a laptop.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Drive decision-making further down in the company, do better job of planning and executing to longer-term strategy. Improve IT support and new hire experience.

    Pros

At times, feels like making a difference in human condition. Some of the colleagues are very intelligent and easy to work with.

    Cons

Steadily decreasing employee benefits. A lot of people walking around and not doing work. Too many talkers, not enough doers.

Corporate climate, with opportunities, but it's a cut throat atmosphere

I have been working at Life Technologies full-time

    Pros

Co-worker support in your career as well as direct managers support. Multiple branches of investigation to encourage innovation. Upward mobility for younger workers who are getting started and can't afford risky start-ups.

    Cons

Corporate atmosphere results in very ambitious goals. Long hours can wear you out quickly. Senior leadership is both entrenched and oblivious, will sell the ambitious goals to corporate leaders and downplay the difficulties projects are experiencing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the excess managers, flatten the reporting structure and open the way for innovation.
