I worked at March of Dimes as an intern

Pros

I was given a lot of responsibility, but this was due to some disorganization in the office.

Cons

The office was understaffed, underpaid. One employee was expected to drive around the state every few weeks for meetings in other counties without any reimbursement for miles/gas.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your employees are stretched too thin, maybe try to focus your attention on fewer events and make the others better.

I worked at March of Dimes full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The mission, the volunteers and the lack of micromanaging.

    Cons

Extremely high turnover, low compensation, lack of recognition, favoritism that has nothing to do with performance and a serious lack of high profile and NEW national and corporate sponsors. Lack of consistent vision, employees and communication. Lack of important information from National being funneled into the chapters.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your employees' hard work both verbally and financially. Pay them on par with other nonprofits in the area in order to get the best and brightest. Don't just hire kids for cheap because you can - you get what you pay for! Encourage innovation, increase retention and pay attention to your corporate culture, ED's! You should be in the office enough to know what is going on with the your staff, especially if your team is not making budget - again. Lastly, remember that if you want your fundraisers to increase their numbers and aggressively add new teams and sponsors, they need to be rewarded and incentivized accordingly.
