Current Employee - Associate Principal in Munich (Germany)

I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

a - Exceptional opportunities to work on various high impact projects and to get to know executive managers
b - Still recognized as the best address for making a career
    c - Teaches best-in-class problem-solving and structuring

    Cons

a - Less industry expertise and functional in-depth knowledge than expected, quality of client work claimed as "best solution" very often lacks practical experience, pragmatism and client insights (often not sufficiently respected by leadership)
b - In particular directors have a tendency to build their own isolated world of thinking, even requesting the team to not work and listen to clients instead of enforcing stronger integration and consideration of client concerns
c - Missing role-models along senior leaders (directors and partners), strong selforiented "diva" mentality. Social behavior towards teams (putting younger colleagues under pressure, threatening, yelling etc.) is very often unacceptable, and beyond professional values
d - Inacceptable work-life balance due to insufficient staffing/focus of project resources on follow-on projects and proposals, overpromising on scope or overstretched leadership (very often all of the 3 causes in one project)
e - Intransparent promotion processes - the recipee for success is to please senior leadership as much as possible. Independent and creative thinking is rather disliked and has an negative impact on performance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Behave less arrogant (in particular towards clients) and greedy, become more humble and modest about yourself. Care more about individual people and clients, and start sticking stronger (again) to whats being said during recruiting events

    Doesn't Recommend

    No opinion of CEO
