Former Employee - Software Development Engineer Intern in Redmond, WA (US)

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

- Flexible project choices
- Good mentorship/coaching experience
- Projects that make an impact
- Good networking opportunity with management and other teams
- As intern you get many intern related events, and of course the intern gift

Cons

- Didn't really take my team ranking into consideration, got assigned to a random team.
- Office type work environment vs. open space work environment (such as in Facebook or Google).
- No free food.

Current Employee - Senior Escalation Engineer in Dallas, TX (US)

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Rewarding and challenging work with emerging technology, good culture in general, meritocracy, flexibility, pay, great benefits, lots of opportunities to branch out, change track, move up.

    Cons

Some corporate ossification inevitable in any large company, Microsoft not excepting. They do a pretty good job of keeping the culture fresh but sometimes fail to meet challenges. Some degree of blind faith in decisions of the brass, and some degree of stupidity by the brass, but less than is typical for a company of this size, so a very light criticism...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a little more ruthless both internally and externally, a little less afraid of regulation and political correctness, and a little less concerned with topics that do not improve the bottom line (like green initiatives and corporate philanthropy that doesn't increase our profits - great to do on your own time, but not the company's and shareholder's).
