I have been working at Morningstar as an intern for less than a year

Pros

Great company culture, flexible schedule, lots of employee training, friendly co-workers, promotion opportunity is there if you want, great communication between team members and with team leaders. GREAT BRAND in Chicago!

Cons

Job actually does not require much analytic skills. It's almost always checking data accuracy and filling the database. Project manager or Team Lead may have some high-level smart thinking. But as data analyst, you tackle with non-technical and non-analytic jobs which easily get you boring and losing you spirit. BTW, sometime, you need to work 9 or 10 hours a day!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make more connection among different units such as data team, research team and IT solution team. Some analyst may have enough background digging into research or programming projects. They can work more closely.

I have been working at Morningstar full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - The company prides itself on helping the individual investor, which is a belief to which most employees truly subscribe.
    - Free lattes and casual dress are incentives that some employees really enjoy, but don't outweigh the cons.

    Cons

    - Management struggles with decisions on how to best structure the firm, and as such there have been multiple large-scale reorganizations in recent history.

    - Compensation is severely below market for finance and IT professionals. Compensation is also awarded from top-down success of the company, and, as such, the (financial) incentive for individual business units to strive for success is completely eliminated.

    - Flat management structure and segregated business units leave little chance for upward mobility.

    - Many groups are very understaffed, so the promoted "work-life balance" that Morningstar prides itself upon is simply not true.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Hire outside consultants or those with executive management experience OUTSIDE of Morningstar. Remove the flat management structure and increase compensation to retain truly talented employees. Stop wasting money by providing so much tuition assistance to people who will only use those advanced degrees to receive market wages at another firm.

I have been working at Morningstar full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits
    Work life balance
    Friendly coworkers
    Great work environment

    Cons

    low base salary
    no opportunities to be promoted
    tedious job everyday

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to high turn-over rate and improve rewarding strategy across the whole company. You have a bunch of smart and hard-working folks, but treating them equally like others will not help you keep people.
