I have been working at National Park Service full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Committed group of exciting, challenging, educated, talented coworkers who despite all obstacles continue to keep the publics treasures open to all. There is an opportunity to work with, visit, and explore a world of historic sites with personal connection to each. Fellow workers always make time to be of assistance and cooperate to achieve positive results. There is a culture of individual control of time, activities, education, and direction. Results are rewarded with commendations and certificates.

    Cons

No clear systems in place for continued advancement in some areas divisions. Management and the Department are struggling with too much to accomplish without enough financial resources. The back log of defered maintenance is in the multi millions and may never be accomplished leaving resources over time unusable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Evolve and discuss advancement strategies with employees.

I have been working at National Park Service full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    - Get to work in beautiful places
    - Work with like minded individuals
    - Pay/Benefits are okay

    Cons

    - Bureaucratic Agency
    - Veteran's Preference when hiring
    - Difficult to move up
    - Inefficient organization

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allocation of training funds are typically geared towards employees that have been there a long time. I understand the seniority reasoning, but younger employees are not being prepared for future opportunities in the NPS.
