Pros

Large corporation with lots of chance for career moves. Long standing reputation in the industry. Many loyal customers and a great dealer network.

Cons

In process of turning things around but in kind of a bad place right now. Recently lost a lot of good people from engineering organization.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your people. That is where the companies competive advantage comes from. Not from having a golden palace in Chicago.

    Pros

Pay is decent, as are benefits, new hires are generally upbeat and excited to do well. Corporate headquarters are outstanding -- cafeteria is awesome!

    Cons

Upper management believes themselves to be incapable of error, middle management tends to seek to maintain the status quo, rather than challenge it with new ideas (people don't get promoted or rewarded for rocking the boat, even if their ideas turn out to be good in the long run). Despite a desire to be innovative, the company hangs onto old ideas too long. Bonuses are rarely fully funded, so even if one exceeds expectations, they receive less than the bonus they are promised.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge that, while new ideas aren't necessarily better, you need to promote testing and trials, so you don't just dismiss innovation out of hand. If you want to be innovative, you need to walk the talk -- and reward people for doing so...not for keeping things the same as they always were, and then wondering why the competition is so far ahead.

I worked at Navistar full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, lots of great places to live in the area. There are definitely great jobs available that encourage innovation and creativity, although these are few and far between and tainted by the rest of the company a little.

    Cons

Upper management tends not to take advice from company's own engineers. It took a long time for them to realize that advanced EGR was not going to work, even though every engineer in the industry had been telling them for years. Lots of yes-men on the ladder. The corporate culture tends to stifle innovation (advanced EGR was advertised as an innovative technology, when in fact it was simply more of the same technology that met previous emissions standards). There's not much funding for research-type projects. Company tends to follow other companies' technologies rather than develop their own. Now that the top management has changed some or all of this may be different.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

LISTEN to your own people. Sometimes when people tell you something's not going to work, it's not just them being negative - sometimes what they're saying is based on the laws of physics.
