I worked at Northwestern Mutual full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Third party acolades are huge; insurance policies unmatched; income unlimited; technology is advanced; people are great

Cons

commission only; you are self employed- so expense management is huge

Advice to ManagementAdvice

service model for old ins. & inv. accounts is so outdated....Service work gets horrendous as the decades pile up.

    Pros

Free Lunch and many peopel who actually work there are very nice.

    Cons

The Management is underqualified and have no idea in how to run a Help Desk. The training for new people is attrocious and they value being a team member over being Experienced! (So what you have are Bubbly peopel getting promoted and customers suffering from an ill- prepared overworked support staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit...you are the problem with the desk

    Pros

Great place/company to gain a structured entrepreneurial experience. If you want to have a structured and repeatable day, then this is the place for you. If you really want to make the big bucks with NML, your goal would be to get into management. However management does not really mean that...it means recruiting and getting people to join. Just be aware of the terms they use versus what you actually do.

    Cons

Not much creativity available long term. There is not much financial learning for the reps themselves. Very easy to go out and be telling people about financial security, meanwhile your personal life and business are strapped to the edge. Many challenges with their business model, and when you develop and grow your own personality to build a practice, you get back handed remarks for "being yourself". Not great if you want to be creative. You are a sales rep working to sell a product for this company. They make you seem like you are holistic at some points with clients...but you are not when it comes to execution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lots of lots of culture changes needed. If they don't change, you will see higher and higher turnover and more rapid decline. The internet and NML is not a good combo for NML--too many people relaying their feelings and they won't join if you don't change something. Treat your reps like gold and then more will stay....clients don't leave because the product is good longer term. And be honest with folks...this is not a place where everyone gets rich...tell people it is about having control of your day---and actually allowing them to do that---and you will get more people to stay rather than saying "you will make lots of money and have lots of free time and work with the best people in the industry...etc etc" because it is only true for a smaller portion. If you give new folks the option to grow to be huge, then let them...if they just want to be happy and small, let them do that as well.
