Current Employee - College Financial Representative in Indianapolis, IN (US)

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual as an intern for more than a year

Pros

Unrivaled independence. Northwestern Mutual lets you make your own schedule and commission lets you decide how much you want to make. You have an opportunity to make a real impact on people's lives. Emphasis on personal growth and development on and off the clock sets Northwestern Mutual apart.

Cons

As with many financial institutions, Northwestern Mutual is a very formal company. Be prepared for constant business formal dress, professional situations, and being in a constant state of marketing yourself. If you love to chase sales goals, this could be the job for you. It is a very tough career for the first few years and requires you to ask tough questions and be courageous.

I have been working at Northwestern Mutual full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Unlimited income potential
Great training, can break down the steps to succeed
    Proprietary products
    Family like work culture
    People always willing to help
    Huge amount of marketing resources
Can use products outside of the Nmfn family

    Cons

Financial rep position not suited for everyone, this is easily the biggest con. It takes the right person who can live with the good and bad days.
Can be a lot of work to start
Not something that is easy to relocate into without a network
Not all network offices are as supportive

I worked at Northwestern Mutual as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Exposure to wealth management industry, learning how to pitch/present yourself, setting your own schedule, actual trial run of what it is like to be a financial advisor, commission based, you could make whatever you wanted out of internship. little effort if you wanted to

    Cons

commission based, using your family/relative contacts, trying to sell life insurance to older people as a 20 year old is very hard, no accountability if you didn't want to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to have more of a set program for interns across the country. I know in some offices they had different programs in monitoring interns relative to my office.
