Current Employee - Research Assistant  in  Stanford, CA (US)
Current Employee - Research Assistant in Stanford, CA (US)

I have been working at Stanford University full-time for more than a year

Pros

Proximity to Silicon Valley and access to industry connections. Reputation probably helps when trying to publish. Far from SF, but beats living in cold places.

Cons

Pay does not match cost of living in the area. Housing situation gets worse each year. These are pretty serious as a third of the pay goes to housing and there's always the risk of losing housing (due to the lottery system) if one goes off to do an internship. Other concerns: Heavy bureaucracy. Too much construction going on.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend less on fountains, more on building more housing units.

I worked at Stanford University full-time for more than a year

    Pros

very good and friendly colleagues to work with. Lots of americans on the department that I worked for and teammates help other team members a lot. At times, tasks are very challenging, and it will be good experience to learn rapid multitasking and improve productivity. monthly get togethers with the team, free drinks and lots of snacks during the afternoon time that is shared by other team members. overall, a very different experience to work here.

    Cons

Framework developed is used internally, and learning the framework takes time. lots of dynamic setup of the code, understanding all the pieces will be difficult for new developers, so networking with colleagues is really important here. Lots of multitasking on a single day, and compensation is low for the new developers with less experience. salary increase is low for developers.
